Tommy Emmanuel
Could he be the greatest living guitarist currently walking the planet? Took Mrs. Choc to see him perform at the Variety Playhouse last night in Atlanta. Wish I knew how to post a YouTube video. His rendition of Classical Gas got quite famous.
The man is simply a freak of nature with a guitar. He’s played and/or recorded with the best of the best and makes a guitar do things I could never dream of. You have to wonder how a brain is wired to master his art like TE. We were blown away. Any of you ever seen him live? Hard not to be a fan once you have. A wizard who just has fun on stage.

I just saw him live 1 month ago in Palm Desert at a conference I go to every year. I don't follow the guitar world...had never heard of him...but he played for us during a break at the conference for about 30 minutes...He was amazing.

I met him several times through Stephen Bennett (my guitar teacher) back when he would come and play at Jim Bennett's (Stephen's brother) church in Richmond, Va, back in the mid - late 1990s.
He is a super nice guy. He is on a whole different planet. Random video of Stephen and Tommy- https://youtu.be/-jawP2guBJw |

A little known TE fact....Tommy has a brother, Phil. Phil plays as good as Tommy. THE best band I have ever seen, going back to the 80s featured an all star cast and both Emmanuel brothers playing electric. It was mind blowing.
A year or so back I went to small TE "masterclass". Tommy and about 50 people in a small room. Tips, tricks, techniques. Hard to say if was inspiring or devastating really. Anyway here is a 1996 Maton "Tommy Emmanuel" dreadnought that I have hanging about. Nice guitar, however falsely advertised - does not make me sound like TE. ![]()

That’s awesome...like a one man/one instrument band. He did that medley in the show we saw. Can’t imagine Lennon and McCartney ever saw this coming! The finish to Lady Madonna at double speed (last bit of video) is mind blowing.

Saw him 2/2 in NYC with my son. Devastating is a good description; my son and I both play and you realize in moments that you’ll never play like that. Whereas with enough practice we might learn most of our favorite lead guitar solos, with TE it’s like fuggettaboutit. Even if the style or song is not your cup of tea, you end up clapping and cheering in sheer admiration for the talent on display.

Yep.
Not being a guitarist myself, I can only imagine the difficulty and commitment of excellence to the instrument. As sailing is to a sailor, the Lord does not subtract from his allotted time, the hours spent with a guitar. |

Yes. Yes, he is.
Saw him here in Phoenix last year for a New Year's show and even my wife enjoyed it--she went in expecting to hate it given that I like to listen to actual musicians who know their craft. ![]()

Tommy is in the class of "Other". The best you can do is appreciate because what they do is outside the realm of what everyone else can.
