Internet speeds and such...
 

So our internet discount package is ending this month or so it seems according to our latest bill.
We have a Verizon FIOS 'bundle' which is internet/tv/phone. Speed is supposed to be 75/75 (at least that is what is on the bill) but I just ran a test using their system and got this:

Kind of feel like I've been taken to the cleaners as they used to say.
What do you IT guys think?

Was that a wired or WIFI test?

Wired.

I use one of those ethernet things that uses the house wiring to get over to the router since wifi to the living room is slow. Guess that could be slowing it down some.
I'll have to try my wife's computer as she's ethernet wired directly into the router in the family room. I'd think it would be faster.

Those extenders work, sorta, sometimes.

Can't expect 100% out of them.

Just not gonna happen.

Just ran a the same test on my wife's computer and it has 'acceptable' speeds showing so I guess my 'device' isn't working 100%.

I sometimes get .500 Mbps on large file downloads with dial-up.

But at least it's not former T-Mobile at 0-5 Kbps.
Maybe business communications work one day. Maybe it doesn't.
They started "throttling" several gigabytes too soon.
I call to complain. "We can always upgrade you to our unlimited $99/mo plan".
"No, buh bye".

Unless it's a problem it's not a problem.

What do you need such speeds for?
We have 1 tv, 3 computers, 2 phone, and a iPad on our dsl system which maxes out at 20 mbps. As long as we’re near the router we never have any problems. Of course there are two of us, so we aren’t running everything at the same time, but we don’t have buffering delays on HD tv or anything.

You might try deleting your device driver and allowing the system to re-install it. I have to do this about once a year on my computer. Same thing....

His problem is how he’s connecting.

Those power line extenders are a crap shoot.

At best they work at 40% of theoretical throughput.

When I run the test on my system the uploading is always 1/2 or 1/3 of download. Your upload is higher. I wonder why.

He's on FIOS.

His 1st numbers were skewed by the Powerline adapter.

The difference in his second set of numbers is not significant.

FIOS can offer matching up / down bandwidth because it's a fiber optic service.

Traditional cable is not the same tech. They follow the DOCSIS standard.

In a nutshell, total bandwidth available is split into channels with typically twice as many channels reserved for downstream.

This makes sense as the service is primarily a consumer offering and consumers predominant need is downloading.

Not a lot are pushing huge data streams the other way.

Short answer, your upload is slower by design.
