You would've thought that they would've pulled out all the stops months and months ago, but I'm not seeing the level of panic I would have if I was faced with that situation. It's looking like it will get ugly, for sure.

the way i heard it; they put all their marbles into conservation. drastic conservation. what they neglected was to put some energy into finding new sources. now that the supply is dwindle to where they are, they have very little to conserve.

tourism is gone, so that revenue went with it. i think they have some desalination plant in the works, but that will take 15 years(?).

i think the news really isnt telling us about the panic..there were riots i think.

Bad decisions from people incapable of making good ones. Conservation doesn't work, long term. People want what they are used to having, "the other guy" can do the conserving.

They need to be taking drastic action, now. If I lived there, I'd pack my crap and GTFO. This is not going to end well.

California needs to pay attention, along with a bunch of other western states, as this is our future, too.

I have a buddy from South Africa. He thinks there will be wide spread panic and lots of dead people.

Very limited resources for millions of people.

That drought has been devastating, and the wildfires destroyed a lot of area(and claimed many lives). It is really a beautiful place though.

Couldn't have stated it better!! At least in our area the supply is pretty well diversified with 10% now being supplied by desalination (at twice the cost).

The problem arises when population exceeds the natural resources. Lemmings run off the cliff. Deer die when there isn't enough food during winter. People just run pipelines to suck the water from other places down to L.A.

Along the same lines of bad decisions:
Build a home in the middle of a forest that has naturally occurring fires and then expect the taxpayers to pay for fire fighters and planes to keep your home from burning. I say if you build out there you should be prepared to pay for a new house when the fire happens. Same with beach front homes. Don't ask the fed govt to subsidize low cost insurance.

So no deserts oceans forest; grasslands? Chit! They have tornados. Where should our population gravitate?

Apologies: I’m still pissy about our recent wildfire. Several in my wifes and my office lost everything.

We offered up half our home, no takers.

The amazing thing to me is that over 50% of the Cape Town residents were not complying with the water restrictions. Still washing cars and watering lawns. Pretty amazing. This is why we are doomed in the long run. We have some errors in our code.

The way the powers that be relay "conservation" is flawed. You can't say "conserve 10%" just because that is what the analysts said needs to be done. That doesn't address the problem of, say, I'm using 30 gallons a day and my neighbor is using 100. The problem isn't the 30 gallon user, it's the 100 yet him meeting the 10% reduction still means he is using 3x the other guy.

Also, until the water stops coming out of the taps, conservation is just a word.

Reality check.

Have been flying in and out of there for 25 years. Problems started when uninformed, inexperienced newcomers to government administration were swept into power. Spent their careers stealing everything not bolted down.

The talent that had run the country (political considerations aside) for the prior good times took their toys and went elsewhere knowing what was coming.

Chickens have come home to roost. (Parallels to Kahleforneeah here); throw in a natural cycle of wet and drought, and read about it on BBC.

I quit going there in 2014 when even the fully auto armed convoys from airport to hotel was not enough to stop attacks on aircrews in and out of JoBerg.

I saw someone talk about dead bodies above? They are already there, but I suspect are not talked about trying to preserving the dead tourist trade.

I had a Pelican friend that lived north of Capetown, but have not heard from in a while. Hope he's OK.

Just talked to a friend/acquaintance from there this morning at breakfast, he said doomsday has been pushed back to June or July when it will be the rain season. He said people have cut back to using 1/4 of what they were using and it is working. He seems to be in touch with friends there very regularly. They are just now working on desalination, a little late but might help next time. They thought it was too expensive until they ran out. California is like that. we would rather have a bullet train from nowhere to noplace that nobody will ride.

We should all move to the PNW and live at the foot of volcanos, or to the midwest Mississippi flood plain, or to New Orleans below seal level, or anywhere on the gulf or Atlantic coast where they have hurricanes, or to any one of the many states in tornado alley, and so on.
All those other places would be better than the forest or coast.

As soon as we stop paying off victims from all those natural disasters we can focus on the problems in Kalifornia.
