Moving to GA

We are planning to move to Ga, I was told that I would have to pay sales tax again on all my vehicles to transfer from NY to GA plates .

I just purchased a car in NY a few months ago for $40000.00 , and just pay NY sales tax. How does that work?

All inputs are appreciated
Thanks

One-time TAVT hits some twice - Story | WAGA

New residents moving into Georgia are required to register and title their motor vehicle in Georgia and must pay 50% of the TAVT within 30 days of moving to the state and the remaining 50% must be paid within the next 12 months.
Reads like they do..twice if you lease
Seems rather green part AND white part..if you get my drift.

Georgia auto taxes

The good news is that once you are in, your tag and ad volorum tax will be $20 per vehicle per year. Going forward, that is a considerable saving. Once you get here, trade your old vehicle on a new/used Georgia vehicle and pay only once! You would have to move fast and get it done before the 30 days are up.

do any other states do this?

It kind of depends on what the $40000 car is. If you bought a new Audi the tax will be high. If it is something like a $40000 964 they don't really put any value on classics and the taxes will be cheap. There is a calculator online you can put your VIN into and it will give you an estimate.

Please rethink this move. We’re already full:

You can see exactly what the tax will be here: https://onlinemvd.dor.ga.gov/tap/welcome.aspx

It used to be $20.00 for a title and then hundreds every year for the tag, but they switched a few years ago to huge one time amount and then $20.00 for the tag every year. Too many people were sneaking cars in for less value based on doctored bills of sale. This way, its done by VIN number and everybody pays the same for the same kind of car, regardless of what you paid for it.

I'm getting ready to buy a 2015 P car and the one time TAVT is $7,845!!! Yes you read that right!!

Dang! I've been shopping for early 997s, I hope they don't hit me that hard.

Yes, eg VT (unless they've changed their thought train), however some provide complementary saw horses (padded) and the softest of tissues for tears.

The thing to keep in mind is don't lose sight of your goals/objectives. States have their quirks. Even vehicle tax redux factors in the noise so long as one is truly changing residence for a bit.
