In watching the Ken Burns Vietnam series, one of the interviewees said, "The military does not create killers, it is finishing school though." Which means that humans have an inate propensity to kill each other already built in. So if you want to come to grips with violence you had better take a good look at your face in the mirror.

Did you see Wayne's speech at CPAC? He touches on these same points.

He is all for better for stricter screening and combining medical with background, but warned, if we are not careful, simple little items can cause big problems for good people.

I wish I had an answer, it seems our government isn't incapable of both protecting us (in cases like mass shooters) and screening out bad people who should not own guns. I fear stepping up the screening process and giving more power to the incompetent will result in more powerful incompetence.

I wonder if question e. includes alcohol? It's the most commonly used depressant drug and has a lot of addicts. Go to an AA meeting and you can't buy a gun?

The government is already so big and bloated that it is incompetent. Once you get on that no fly list you never can get off. Other examples of bureaucratic failure are Katrina, BP oil spill, the FBI's response to this kid to name just a few.

It has already happened with Social Security recipients. ANYONE who requested help setting up a financial plan, even simple budgeting, was put on the "No Buy" list. It took a specific act of congress, signed by this president to reverse that "regulation".

And remember, there was discussion of putting anyone on the no fly list, on the no buy list. They don't notify you that you're on the list, and there are no reviews or proceedures to get off the list.

You do realize how both the USAF and USA treat for Malaria?

None of those were on the list...except the no-fly list and one can get off that through adjudication. You do realize that I have over 40 years in the military?

I hadn’t followed your career in order to get in a measuring contest.

It is fact that service members that were referred for PTSD screening, reservists getting a VA of 0% while passing multiple 1st Class medicals, and others with the official minimum of 30% all have been denied and even have had firearms removed/confiscated for a protective measure. All from the PTSD referrals from either the DoD or VA as mental problems, yours nuts.

You write as either USA or USAF and I assumed you would remember the news issues with how they treated for malaria pre-deployment, while deployed, and post deployment. I’ll take the hit on assuming you were a career officer in wither of those services and would be familiar with the issues.

Basic tenant of the USMC is everyone has someone junior except the most junior Pvt. Seniors are required to council a junior, both formally (Pro/Cons or Fitreps) and informally with documenting in your Plt. Sgt. or Plt. Commander notebook as appropriate. To the best of my knowledge all the services require at least formal evaluation and are required to provide counselling.

I have a hard time believing that in your 40 years you have never had someone under your command be falsely accused of domestic violence, threats of violence during marital strife or divorce. I know I was quick with a MPO mostly to protect the Marine or Sailor under my command. You and I have different standards when it comes to restricting a persons rights. As this is nominally a car forum I used the speeding ticket. What is the standard?

For quite a while there was no mechanism to be removed from the no-fly list. Tougher when service members are coming and going then trying to take leave when they are able. Restricting rights and placing military teams on the no-fly lists for flying to certain countries under orders with tickets paid for the military without investigating is unacceptable to me; guilty until proven innocent. We have different standards as to the oath we have taken and administered thousands of times.

Folks that are falsely accused are pretty much screwed if they cannot find a way to clear it up (in the military or not)...and I am pretty sure that a "run in with the law" was not referring to speeding tickets.

Tab's references to counsel were psychiatric, not supervisory.

You should listen to him. He illustrates the divide between normal people and the rabid political partisans. He is as amusing as a comedian imitating a person with a hysterical personality disorder. The only problem with his act is he doesn't pause for laugh lines.
