OK, so some students were working on their math. A student said the square root symbol looked like a gun. The students then began discussing it and a student "said something the sheriff’s office said could have sounded like a threat out of context." Some numbnut got their panties in a wad, and they had to go scare the sheit out of the kid and search his house.

Yeah, shocking, a 14 or 15 year old said something stupid. Someone call the police!

I don't have a problem with the students thinking it was in the shape of a gun, or with them talking about it. What I have a problem with is the moron that thought the cops should be called. I'm assuming that was a teacher or parent.

We're domed!

These fooking teachers need a good slapping upside their heads. Lots are like that and can't think or make a sound judgement anymore or too scare to. I was at my kid's open house and made a comment about how my kid needs a kick in the rear to get going in the morning. She looked at me with wide eyes open and you don't mean that and you should do that. She was serious. I rolled my eyes.

Teacher "over-reacts", and people get their knickers all twisted. Teacher "under-reacts", something happens, and people call for their head on a platter. Seems like a no-win situation. But by all means, cast stones. After all, we have all the facts and context, right?

Sheesh.

Its called using good judgement, and clearly in either case you present good judgement wasn't used.

CNN will report it was a secret code for an AR-15, call for protests and demand Trump's resignation.

But my gun could be confused with a sq. rt. symbol. That is the real danger.

I am curious about your definition of good judgment. For me, it is acting on anything that presents itself as worrisome by immediately bringing in others in the organization to make informed decisions. In a heightened state of awareness about school shootings and troubled youth, it may at times look like over-reaction. But that's likely a better outcome than under-reaction.

I wasn't there. I don't know the context. I don't have the benefit of a relationship with the students to know if the behaviour was a marked or worrisome change. I do know that it is always easy to "arm chair" quarterback these situations.

And this isn't really the teacher's fault. It was reported to the authorities, who confirmed that the statement could look like a threat in the right context, and also decided that they had enough cause to search the student's home. Sounds like what SHOULD happen in this day and age.
