Best fire extinguisher to carry in vehicle?

I'm embarrassed to admit that I know very little about fire extinguishers. What is the best one for putting out an engine or vehicle fire on the side of the road? I really should carry one in my PU truck. TIA.

You guys and your hardware... why do you need to carry a fire extinguisher when fire departments are just minutes away?

I think it is class D you want.
you want one for metals, although if the fire gets that far its probably too late.

my 9146 caught fire one night.
no fire extinguisher.
it was an oil fire. I took off my shirt and managed to get it out before any damage.
I still have the steel braided oil line hanging on my wall as a reminder

My 944S burned into a total loss in under 2 minutes. The fire department had a phenomenal response time, but seconds count in a car fire.

I used to carry a halon but I don't see them online anymore, I see something but they are $$ (start at $200).

Chemical extinguishers are a PITA to clean up (but I keep one in the garage)

I put out a car fire with the fire extinguisher mounted in my 911. My son and I were driving along on a busy road and come upon a Camry in the median with it's hood up and engine compartment engulfed in flames, so I grabbed my fire extinguisher and put it out.

I don't even remember what kind of extinguisher it was but the owners of the car (and the fire department that showed up too late) were glad I put it out.

Yes ^ popping the hood allows more airflow. -Fires love airflow

IOW don't do it if you can shoot thru the grill. Depends on the car.

H3R Performance are good, but any brand is better than nothing as long as it is charged and not out of its inspection date.

I witnessed a car fire. It was just a matter of seconds before the fire consumed the car. Opening the hood - yep fie and oxygen are a one two punch.

Halon extinguishers are different. Read up. A Halon unit might have put that fire out, but only if the hood was left closed.

That is to say....if the room in which the fire is burning is too large for the Halon unit to fill with Halon, then the Halon unit likely would not work. Think: Marine engine room fires. Everybody get out....push the big red Halon button.

Cayman, no way i can get to the engine if it burns.
the only thing i could try is a foam extinguisher and foam up the intakes
or a CO2 extinguisher, hard mounted with a nozzle in the engine bay and just gass it if i suspect trouble
