Credit Card fraud - I got hit again

I get email alerts from my bank, and I got one today, which was odd since I hadn't done any shopping today - 3 transactions in the Bay Area. We went out to eat on Saturday, which is the only time the card has been out of my grubby mitts in quite some time, so I imagine someone copied down the numbers when they ran the card.

You'd think that by now someone would have come up with a better system for restaurant payments.

Tell the place you won't be back unless you can pay with the card never leaving your sight (or pay with those funny pieces of green paper called money).

There is,

In a few restaurant in NYC area, they bring the payment portal to you... the card never leaves your hand..

Or you can get up and witness the transaction..

Cash is the answer (in restaurants).

KNS 02-25-2018 05:17 PM

I try to use cash when I go to restaurants for that very reason.

Must be a pretty short list of suspects...

Nothing for you to worry about. The Credit Card take the lost, part of doing business.

Some company card (Visa) are on top of it (a change of flight home from LA got me to Vancouver instead of Toronto and as soon as I use the card at the Vancouver airport, they call my wife...).

Some other (Master Card), a few years later, they knew that I check in in at Victoria hotel but let through $3,000+ charges back home 3,000 miles away (in place that I never shop).

Unfortunately, in the end we all pay for this.

I first saw this in Ukraine 5 or 6 years ago. Amazing that we refuse to adopt this in the USA.

There is one. They call it cash.

Those Ziosk machines have been discussed before - IMHO their sole redeeming quality is that they prevent some potentially unscrupulous server from disappearing with your card to do who-knows-what with.

Of course they’re vulnerable to card skimmers but that’s another discussion and (to my knowledge anyway) isn’t as big of a problem.

Get gas with your card recently?
That's where the lion's share of CC skimming takes place, IIRC.

All over the planet, anywhere where the chip and PIN is standard. You need the transaction thingy to put the PIN in.

Only here do we do chip and signature (or, still in many places, swipe and signature...)

Which restaurant did you go to? Paul Martins in Roseville had a big problem with this a year or two ago. You absolutely should be calling the manager of the restaurant.

I got hit twice a year+ ago at the same place. It was a restaurant at a local rez. We like the restaurant so enjoy eating there. Both times we had charges on our card three days after eating there. I talked to the local security chief and gave him a printout of the charges a couple of weeks before & some time after the bad charges. Don't know what he did with the complaint. Haven't had a problem since though.

I had a card compromised in a city where it never left my wallet. RFID scanner probably.

T77911S 02-26-2018 03:56 AM

that's a bit unusual to get an email I would think.

my wifes has been stolen several times, she gets a phone call because the CC company either lets her know right then or they want to confirm charges with her right then so they can stop the card.

she uses a CC for her business to order merchandise. she narrowed it down to one company that was stealing it.
its funny that they have added that stupid 3 digit "security" code on the back. ALL your info is given out when you use it.

the bank has always eaten any charges on her card. you really aren't safe unless you use cash or a check, then the businesses are at risk with checks. either the customer gets screwed or the business gets screwed with bad checks.

sc_rufctr 02-26-2018 04:08 AM

I get TXT notification from my bank when more than $200 is charged to my card.

That doesn't help with lesser amounts but I check my accounts on-line daily. So far so good but I suspect it's only a matter of time before I get hit.

It sucks but what can you do?
I carry cash and use it but the convenience of a CC is hard to give up at times.

We also have "Pay Wave" now and you can setup a smart phone to "Pay Wave" but I don't know how good it is.

My debit card # has been compromised a few times....never a cent out of my own pocket, and waiting a few daze for a new card is no problemo...the cost of convenience imo. The card industry will almost always eat the losses....they aren't gonna kill the golden goose ;)....safer than checks or cash imo.

How is it safer than cash?
