The problem- aside from the health effects- is that it's $300 a month on the low end. No-can-do. If you actually want to learn even a little bit about wine then make it $500 or $800 or $1000. Unsustainable for my station. And a generally unproductive idea. Even for my occupation.

In uni I worked on what is called a brew on premise. You buy the kits and make it at home. I can make a damn good wine for 80-120 for 30 bottles depending on how much I want to spend.

Sounds good to me!

My granddad drank a swig of moonshine every morning as his feet hit the floor and every night as he got in bed. He lived to be 90 years old. The same with the founder of the company I work for that lived to 94 and my Moms uncle that iived to within a month of turning 100.

None of them drank any sort of alcoholic beverage socially at all. Never actually saw them drink. They drank only a swig or two every day to two of their favorite Liqueur. Granddad liked moonshine. Founder of the company liked a liqueur that had the same name as his family name. Mom's Uncle liked Jack Daniels.

Founder told me his doctor said that anyone that drank alcohol before they were forty were ruining their health, and not drinking any after forty was also ruining their health. Noticed it on his breath late one night doing some product photography for the company and asked him about it. Never actually saw him drink.

Remember when 3 years old went for a car a ride with Dad and Granddad. We drove around the countryside near Granddad's small town home. They would point out where someone used to live etc. At one point we stopped and Granddad put mason jar in a tree stump with a couple of bucks in it. We continued to drive and stopped at a little cafe in another close small town and they had coffee. On the way home we stopped at the stump, Granddad got out and picked up his mason jar filled with a clear liquid. Remember him telling me it was his stump water.

Two beers every night for the last 10 years. After 50 years of tossing and turning I found a way to get to sleep. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gifhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gif

Hey...if Keef ever gets the X-pensive Winos back together you could replace Ivan on keys ;)

G

I have two beers on tap in my kitchen so yeah, about that.....

While I’m not above occasionally getting carried away I just genuinely like beer, and so does the wife. I’ve quit drinking on a few occasions which does help with weight loss but I never felt a damn bit better. I’ve met people that have no vices, they are boring.:p

David 02-27-2018 05:54 AM

I've always said my vanity would get me to quit drinking one day. Well, at 50 my six pack is gone but I still have at least 2 drinks a night so I guess that wasn't true.

Do I have an AUD? Sure but do I beat my wife, wreck my cars (OK sometimes), miss work, etc? No.

I do make a conscious effort to stop at 2 drinks (maybe 3 or 4 if it's Lite beer) so I'm certainly way better than I was the first 45 years of my life.

I'm also afraid to completely give up alcohol because I'm worried I'd do something foolish like buy an airplane.

scottmandue 02-27-2018 07:11 AM

If I stick to wine I'm okay but like Seahawk vodka is my Kryptonite...

So I stick to one/three glasses, usually to unwind after work.

Call me crazy but I'm considering edible Mary Jane as an occasional substitute.

It is called "rationalizing".Maybe a new thread "Are you an alcoholic?" would be better?

I find that allowing myself a beer or two any day of the week has me drink less overall. I have managed alcohol intake for a long time by not drinking during the week but it left me hitting it harder on Friday through Sunday. The number of total drinks consumed per week remains the same, but if only drinking on weekends, there are too many per day. Maybe more fun in terms of catching a buzz, but not good for your system.

I'd say I'm a mild case.

After my last medical checkup, my physician advised me to put a bar in the shower. I have obeyed his suggestion

I gave up beer years ago because it made me feel like the Goodyear blimp. I have always and still do enjoy a nice glass of wine or scotch , even sherry. But I have slowed my intake ALOT. I currently have 12-ish bottles of very nice single malt and about 20-ish bottles of wine in the basement. It will take me a long time to finish off all of that.

Take it FWIW, I've often heard it said, if you think you have a problem with alcohol, you probably do.

1. Drinking more or for a longer period of time than intended.

So if I intend to go out and get drunk, does that count?;)

911 Rod 02-27-2018 11:27 AM

I think all the drinkers have scared away the non drinkers that like to talk about themselves on this type of thread.
I drink every day. A couple of beers, a glass of wine and maybe a martini after dinner.
Very, very rare that I am noticeably drunk. Maybe that is the problem as I'm good at it. lol

Rickysa 02-27-2018 11:55 AM

I had never heard of AUD before today. I guess the shrink's "bible" is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) - from the post above - very interesting:

Drinking more or for a longer period of time than intended.
Feeling incapable of cutting back on the amount of alcohol consumed.
Becoming sick for an extended period of time as a result of drinking too much.
Inability to concentrate due to alcohol cravings.
Inability to care for a family, hold down a job, or perform in school.
Continuing to drink despite problems caused with friends or family.
Decreased participation in activities which were once important.
Finding oneself in dangerous or harmful situations as a direct result of drinking.
Continuing to drink despite adding to another health problem, feeling depressed or anxious or blacking out.
Drinking more as a result of a tolerance to alcohol.
Experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

If you have at least two of these symptoms, this indicates the presence of an alcohol use disorder. Whether you have a mild, moderate, or severe AUD depends on how many of these symptoms you experience.

Mild: Two to three symptoms
Moderate: Four to five symptoms
Severe: Six or more symptoms

I'd be concerned if I didn't feel sick after consuming too much.

How about having a cop wake you up the next morning after passing out on someone's front lawn? Near the hedges , though. On the upside it was a really nice crib. :)

He did not quite pass as a garden gnome. Booze alone. No drugs.

The fruit of my loins.

Three weeks now in a lock down rehab facility. Six months.

I brought him a care package. They kicked back the body wash because it has alcohol in it.

sand_man 02-27-2018 04:05 PM

Wow Bob, that's tough. I hope he gets better.

Not really. Just no sense in discussing it if the person feels everything is just fine and dandy. Ultimately it is your choice.

Bumping this back up after 8 months or so. Curious to hear how everyone who had some concerns is doing.

Erakad 11-01-2018 03:33 PM

When I was on AD, the answer to the doc was always 2-4 oz/week...anything more got you "hard looks". Now (retired) I find that beer adds to the gut, and hard liquors are enjoyed in "moderation". However, I do enjoy wine (fruit of the summer) a couple times a week, and imbibe more with the scotch/burbon/brandy with visitors. I found I can easily drop 5-10 pounds by limiting alcohol consumption especially by avoiding beer. Limiting the wine is a harder proposition....next, working on the cigars.

vash 11-01-2018 03:40 PM

Feb 4.

I think I’ve had 20 beers since then. Zero hards, maybe two glasses of wine. It was easier than I thought.

Next on the hit-list. Sugar. :)

look 171 11-01-2018 03:45 PM

Like most, I drank a little bit during college, but stopped after a year and don't miss it. I do enjoy a bitter beer now and then actually, like it a lot. This year, I had four beers. All were social drinks during dinner. Last year, I had one. I tell people, I don't drink only because I just don't care for it. I haven't had a shot of the hard stuff in more then 8-10 years.

Sugar shouldn't too hard, but the carbs will kick my ass. Yes, I like rice and pasta.

I ditched 20 lbs in two months by cutting out 85-90% of carbs and ate smaller portions. Oh yeah, I rode about 100 total miles a week, hard like I always have. Then my kids wanted pineapple fried rice and loco mocal. I had a big dish of both and fell off the wagon and gained 12 lbs back. Feeling like a fatty again in my tight jersey

Erakad 11-01-2018 03:53 PM

Sugar is a curse, but worse are the artificial sweeteners. I TRY to avoid the sweets and consciously avoid them, but not as religiously as I should.

rfuerst911sc 11-02-2018 04:56 AM

I have been drinking beer since before legal age and I'm now 60 soon to be 61 . That German heritage is a tough one to fight :D . Last year and most of this year I was building my 2 car man cave . Most of the work this year was in sweltering temps and humidity and I was pounding beers daily . Not proud of that it's just a fact . Many days would put away a 12 pack :o . About 3 months ago I decided I needed to slow the train WAY down and since then only have 2-3 beers on Friday night which is date night with the little lady . Have not had a single beer during the week since . I have lost 16 lbs. so far and my blood pressure is getting better and my gut is slowly going away . Do I miss it you bet but I have cut it off before I would NEED it . My man cave fridge now has ice tea and flavored water in it ............ what a wuss I have become :D

onewhippedpuppy 11-02-2018 05:00 AM

I lost about 40 lbs several years ago. As of a few days ago I had gained 15 back. I've done a pretty good job of changing my diet for the better, but have a taste for good beer that's just killing my weight. So as of yesterday I'm going back to light beer, and less of it. I bought new clothes when I lost the weight, and dammit I'm not getting bigger sizes again!

If y'all are willing to ship me your stash....I will help ya out...slowly, over time ;)
