My wife and I just finished watching Godfather 1 and 2
....for about the 5th time and they seem to get better each viewing, yet I've never even given Godfather 3 a second thought and have never seen it, mostly because the reviews at the time were not at all good.
Has it improved over time, is it worthwhile watching? Or still rotten? As a little aside A few years ago we had a child's seesaw/teeter totter with two wooden horse heads one at each end for the kids to hold on to, at our cottage.. After a few years the device became a bit rotten so was no longer safe but the horseheads were in good shape. Well, one of my BIL set them aside and ......well you see where I'm going. We have a 3rd BIL from Boston, and he went to bed one night pretty well looped and that's when BIL no.1 slipped in and inserted the head in his bed. Next morning, we thought it was funny, he not so much. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Watch it and decide for yourself. I've seen the third one only once - many years ago- but my recollection is that is was decent enough.

The third one is a good movie. It's just not the cinematic masterpiece that the first two are. It also has to address some of the intentional ambiguity of the first two to be able to continue the story, which was a tall order IMO and sure to leave someone disappointed.

I liked all three.
Those movies bring back fond memories for me, I loved sitting and watching with my Mrs5543's grandfather, who spoke fluent Italian and actually grew up in a Mafia family in Chicago and Brooklyn. He would give me the real translation of the Italian scenes, some of the curse words did not translate well in the script at the bottom of the screen. Those movies would get his mind going and then the stories would come out. His father was a very powerful mobster, so much so that when his oldest son (Mrs5543's grandfather) was in but wanted out, he was granted asylum. He just had to move away. I have not watched them in years, I may have to dig them out.

Personal I didn't like #3 (loved 1&2).
To me it felt like they were milking the plot, and it morphed from a gangster movie to a conspiracy move, YMMV

Saw 1&2 countless times. Saw #3 when it came out in the theater. Sophia Coppola is a much better filmmaker than an actress and it was painful watching the interactions between her and Andy Garcia.

I thought GIII was terrible. Of course that is in comparison to I and II, though. I just watched all three and wish I had never watched III.
The biggest problem I had with it is that it did not have the feel of the first two. It was soapy (as in soap opera). It was produced by Nicholas Cage too, so there's that. Sophia Coppola was the worst choice possible. They should have stopped after II. |

N. Cage acting or directing or even producing. On second thought think I might pass. Looking back think I may have seen previews and the characters seemed all wrong, a thing No.s 1 and 2 nailed. Last edited by yellowperil; 02-27-2018 at 11:40 AM.. |

A few years ago my family got the three movies as a boxed DVD set for Christmas and we binge watched them back to back over Christmas vacation. I really came to understand what masterpieces they were watching them uninterrupted like that.
Number three is a good movie. As Legion said, it just wasn't the understated masterpiece the first two were. It is a different type of movie with more of a modern feel rather that the old time period drama noir feeling of the first two.

Funny story. My friend was the set decorator on Godfather III. He was scouting Little Italy and someone stole his nice leather bag with his script and his 35mm Nikon camera and some personal items.
A few weeks later he was told he needed to see this "wiseguy" to rent all of the sausage carts, flower carts, etc. for the scene even though he knew he could get them cheaper renting and trucking them out from LA. He ends up striking up a friendship with the guy and spent $$$$ on cart rentals, and casually mentioned his script bag being stolen. 2 days later the guy hands him his script bag complete with camera, script and personal belongings intact.

3 is a good story... interaction with the 'Church'. Involves the death of the Pope, just days after he's elected (which actually happened).
2 big issues... Robert Duvall is not in the movie - salary dispute. Sophia Coppolla IS in the move... she is just awful. Teeth gritting. (she was about the 5th choice for the role). It's complex enough that I watched it twice; glad I did. You should watch it... Last edited by tcar; 02-27-2018 at 11:58 AM.. |

She was also in the first movie. She was the baby being baptized in near the end when all the heads of the 5 families were getting killed

I've never seen any of them. This is something my dad would watch.

![]() My advice to anyone would be to skip GF3 and read the original book by Puzo that is the source material for the films. That will give you a lot more background of the first two than the schitty GF3.
