Low fat? Low carb? no difference in results

A year-long randomized clinical trial has found that a low-fat diet and a low-carb diet produced similar weight loss and improvements in metabolic health markers. Furthermore, insulin production and tested genes had no impact on predicting weight loss success or failure. Thus, you should choose your diet based on personal preferences, health goals, and sustainability.

I vote for portion control.

Calories in < calories burned = weight loss? Huh who knew?

The types of fat does effect cholesterol and heart disease though.

I think there has been some debate about insulin's role in weight loss, as well as, genetic markers...this study seems to suggest it's a wash.

There were two national studies done a while ago. I haven't been able to find the link but they did a study on 2000 calories a day low fat and 2000 calories a day low carbs. The guys on the 2000 calorie low fat diet nearly starved to death and were hungry all the time. The 2000 calorie low carb guys were healthy. Where the calories come from does matter. To me it sounds like to lose weight go low fat and to maintain and stay healthy go low carb.

>>> Specifically, they (both groups) were instructed to “maximize vegetable intake ... minimize intake of added sugars, refined flours, and trans fats; and ... focus on whole foods that were minimally processed, nutrient dense, and prepared at home whenever possible.” <<<

Max'ing veggie intake and minimizing sugar and flour (and the other things mentioned) are hallmarks of any low-carb diet. So it seems like both groups were doing very similar things and only varying in one aspect. Further, weight-loss is only one benefit of a low-carb diet, and maybe not the most important. Seems like the danger of this study is its implication that Low-Fat foods are good for you. That can be true in the very narrow definition of the study, but it implies that 'low-fat' processed foods commonly available at the grocery are good for u. They are generally some of the worst foods one can eat.

No veggies for a strict low carb diet. Maybe some green beans for a treat but there are big carbs in veggies.

Absolutely NO on maxing.

Big is relative. Vs a pizza, pfffft. But if you wish 20 carbs a day veggies are a no no.

20 carbs a day delivers vicious weight loss. Thing is it fools your body. I really think the genuine answer is portion control as stated.

Yupp. Portion control. Easy math.

I just wish I had written a few of those hokus-pokus books on stupid diets. Would be sitting with an umbrella drink in the sun by now..

In 2005 I went on the Atkins Diet and lost 65lbs. I kept the weight off and did not gain a pound for 5 years. Eventually, I resumed my bad habits of cookies and sweets and started gaining back the weight. I tried the Atkins Diet again a couple of years ago but was not successful and I don't know why (age?). The only thing different is that they did not have the "Atkins Bars & Treats" in 2005 and if I buy them now, I have a tendency to eat the whole box in one sitting.

My new system is detoxing my body by various means. I consume food grade diatomaceous earth, take high dose of Niacin (Vitamin B-3), and sauna and sometimes I take activated charcoal. I am following a program that was perfected by DR. Yu who was very involved in detox for Gulf War Vets and 911 Fire Fighters. Since I started this program, I have lost 44lbs with very little effort. I do consume less sweets but certainly have not cut them off. I also take a fairly high level of pro-biotics. I was wearing up to 38 waist pants and now wear 32 and am about to start buying 30's.

All I can say is that since I started this program, I've been losing weight, bowel movements have completely changed for the better, I'm sleeping better, my skin has improved substantially, My nails have to be trimmed every week, My toenail fungus has disappeared, and I think my hair is growing (albeit slowly). I'm sticking with this one for a while.
