Tower Records founder passed away
Russ Solomon was a bit of a Sacramento icon, Tower Records started out in a drugstore across the street from the Tower Theater, old movie house that still stands. He was a really good guy. Died having a glass of whiskey watching the academy award show. As a youth, I spent a ton of dough in his store.

We never had them where I've lived, but I visited the one in Nawlin's just about every visit....saw more than a few packed in-store performances during Jazz Fest trips too. End of another era...RIP.
We always had Peaches and Turtles instead....I spent years in all of them on Tuesdays....when the new releases came out :) |
Decent documentary on it: All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records (2015) - IMDb

Missed this. Tower Records, Music Plus, Licorice Pizza were all go to's for records in my youth. Tower was the king, though. Really enjoyed the documentary, thrilled to see Tower alive and well in Japan.
I get sad whenever I see the large Tower Records sign on the old downtown Brea location. |
I shudder to think of all the hours I spent in Tower Records during my teen years...looking for music to listen to instead of listening to music!

Hey I invested in that movie :)

So many good times at Tower. One time in particular.....
My girlfriend and I were wandering the aisles and she was in one aisle and I was in another across the store. She met up with some people and after a few minutes came over and told me they invited us to a party in Laurel Canyon. We followed them and the party was at Joni Mitchell's house. And a Licorice Pizza story..... I worked at a mens clothing store in downtown Long Beach on Pine Ave and the very first LP opened right around the corner on 5th street. I was buying albums almost daily to play in my store and got to know the owners of LP. They offered me a job and told me they were planning to open more stores and needed someone to manage and grow with them. I decided to pass on the offer. Big mistake! |
