+ 1 to the 20% and round up policy. Im still at 15% for bad service. Im also at about 15% for very fancy places.......if dinner for 2 is 200$ I feel fine with a 30$ tip.

I think the whole decide what you want to pay for service isnt really a good method, but I also think you agree to the known terms when you go out to eat.

That's what I'm finding interesting as well. bad service will still draw a tip...
maybe it's an American thing?

I tip 15-20% and am annoyed by it every time. Tipping makes no sense at all. There is no basis for it. Prices should be set and that's it. If an employee doesn't like how much they make, take it up with the owner, like most employees do. It shouldn't be mandatory the customers subsidize the pay.

If that means food is more expensive, so be it. Then it would be the owners issue to make sure he/she hires good servers to get repeat customers.

Yep...you nailed it..and just like a bonus, nothing would ever stop a customer from adding something additional if they desired for going above and beyond. It's beyond stupid how it works now....or doesn't. I don't trade my professional services for nothing, or maybe even a loss, just hoping to earn a living on the recepients' whim when I'm through, cause a lot of them suck....being people. It's absurd....

edited: I've absolutely stopped going to places due to poor service by low level emoloyees, many times, places that I frequented. I just walk out, never to return, and the owner will never know it...their loss imo. I don't care...
