The important lesson here is that he is not going to FPMITA for screwing people over by raising the prices on drugs; he's going away because he screwed over well-connected investors.

The price of Daraprim is still $750 a pill. The jail sentence sends a clear message that you can't screw with everyone. Just the poor and needy.

The jail sentence has nothing to do with price gouging.
There is nothing illegal about it. See Valeant

How many of you have actually researched the guy and listened to why he increased the price of Daraprim? Also, if anyone actually needed Daraprim he gave it to them for free. If Pfizer did what he did, no one would have said a word.

See his explanation, skip to 5:05. The first 5 minutes are garbage.

He is a strange dude, no doubt about it...

I don't get the logic.
He raised prices to raise money for R&D and a better solution.
But, if he gives away the drug to people who can't afford it
that begs the question, who can afford it?
Was this a way to just get money from insurance companies?

He was already making profit, he raised prices to gouge sick people to the point they could no longer buy their medicine.

Not everyone has insurance, I do, my meds $5-$15. Little old lady in line in front of me +$300

I think some of us would have the exact same reaction if we knew the background as to why congress invited him down. It was a publicity stunt, they really don't care about the issue at hand. If they took a few minutes to actually understand why he raised the prices, they wouldn't have wasted their time or his. Some of the news media loves to sensationalize stuff and not tell the whole story just to get more clicks and make $$$. Hell, Hilary was using this story in her campaign. Instead of trying to solve the issue, they just pat themselves on the back for grilling the big bad guy. Honestly, I think Gowdy recognizes this and that is why he is getting out of politics.

He jacked up the rate of the drug to insurance companies. If people could not afford it, he gave it to them for free. He gave large discounts to medicaid and hospitals.

What did he do with that money? Supposedly he put it towards research to come up for a better drug for a rare disease - something to replace the 70 year old drug that already existed (and was quite harsh on the body).

I don't mean to sound like one of those crackpot conspiracy theorists but instead of getting mad at him, get mad at the whole industry...its all effed up. These are the same companies pushing opioids, forming a new generation of addicts and messing up society.

Martin was a protégé of Jim Cramer on MadMoney. He is a freak but I don't think the pill jacking is as bad as the media made it out to be, as pointed out in the above posts. His live streams on youtube were pretty weird.

His intent, like Valient's, was to gouge insurance companies ( and therefor everyone who buys drugs through insurance companies). It's pretty common for drug companies to offer free drugs or co-pay reimbursement for their drugs to the uninsured. It's a small price to pay to keep big insurance paying their inflated prices.
