Short story about yesterday at Amelia Island....

In the morning I attended Werks Fest and saw many fine examples of our favorite Porsche cars. Great cars and a great time spent with friends. I took the shuttle bus back to the Ritz Carlton and walked around the cars lined up for the auction. I decided to walk back behind the scenes and take a short cut through the valet parking garage. I walked in and the first car I saw was this;

The 1971 LeMans winning 917K.:eek:

There was one guy with it and he was adding air to the rear tire. I asked him if it was the real thing and he said it was straight from the factory and in fact the '71 winner.
Some days are better than others. :D

A few hours later it was brought out into the daylight for a photo shoot. It was parked next to one of the grandstands and I was able to get a few shots from above.

I bet just seeing that one car would make the day worthwhile.

Haunting the garages at these kind of events often pays off. Nice find. No inside knowledge but guessing if the factory took the time and trouble and expense of shipping the car over to the US, they'll leave it in the country and bring it to Rennsport Reunion in the fall. They brought it to RR in Daytona in 2017.

IF that happens, I'm further guessing that the car might be on display at the PEC in Atlanta and PEC in LA so lots of people will get the chance to have a closer look. Yes, I know that's a guess upon a guess, but seems reasonable to me...

Thanks for the thread and pics, Paul! That 917 is so beautiful.....blows my mind every time I see it!

Nice finds Paul! Hard to imagine those cars just sitting there adjacent to hotel guest parking.

Kevin - small world but that is me standing in front of the #20 car in your pic from RRIII. It was amazing to be in there with all that history ... don't think a garage like that will ever be replicated!

Saw that one or near that one at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum 12 years ago. I kinda think those cars must move around from museum to museum.

Outstanding on eye-balling the 917. What a treat.
