telephone SPAMMERS elevated the game!!

WOW!!

i am getting unknown callers..but they come with names.

i just got one from "WIRELESS CALLER"
yesterday, i got one from "ELEUTIAN FRENTES"..just how the hell do they attach a name to the call?!!

just how many numbers can i block? this is insanity.

GH85Carrera 03-16-2018 09:25 AM

We get a lot from just the name of a city.

Name Unavailable calls a lot. If I don't now em, I don't answer. Let them leave a message, if it is important, they will leave a message.

The scammers just spoof most numbers so I stopped just blocking every number. I only block them if they call multiple times with the same number.

We got a call from a extraterrestrial I guess. They left a message but it was a cross between the squeal of a fax, and a recording of some high pitched yodeling. It was for sure not a language I understood. I just deleted it.

When I complained about all the robo calls to the Frontier rep I was talking to when renewing our phone package he referred me to this site:

Stop robocalls and telemarketers with Nomorobo

You might give it a look. I didn't sign up for it but it does look promising.

I set my phone to only receive calls from numbers in my contacts list. If you're not on my contacts then it goes straight to voicemail (which isn't setup so you can't leave a message even if you tried). Works great for me.

I get heavily spammed for "The warranty on your Jaguar is expired".

Maybe I got sold onto a list by the Hendrick dealer I bought the XK from.

Pisses me off badly.

If you could hear my voice the last time it happened two days ago you'd realize just how good my acting ability is in talking politely to the lady on the other side.

Now I did tell her it had 2.2M KM's, and that my name was George Burns. But I kept my tone polite.

We'll see if I get more calls after this, it has been non stop for years. Never the same number. Often it is a robot recording, once in a while it is a person. They also leave voicemail.

My Jaguar's aftermarket warranty is called depreciation, by the time something goes wrong I'll be able to buy another one for less than the cost of a warranty.

I don't answer calls I don't recognize anymore. No voicemail or text message, no callback.

onewhippedpuppy 03-16-2018 10:52 AM

I get them all the time from numbers in my area code, sneaky bastages.

NOMOROBO was pretty much the only thing that kept me tied to Frontier FIOS.

If you end up with a provider that does not support simultaneous ring the other option is to poet to google voice.

Does a pretty good job of filtering the robocalls.

NOMOROBO works because they answer the call on the first ring and can instantaneously detect a robo call and they simply disconnect it.

Googgle voice seems t work more like filtering spam, once they detect it they pre emptively block it but that means every now and then the calls get through for a day before they get blocked.

9/10 calls lately were solicitors/spam. $6mo. from century link I got "you have reached a number that does not accept solicitors, if you're a solicitor, hang up now, etc." Seems to discourage most of them, thank dog. The few that get through I give them shiite.

red-beard 03-16-2018 11:17 AM

The latest issue I have is the "near number" calls. They spoof their phone number, by using your phone number and changing the last few digits. I had one come in that used my wife's phone number. And because it was "her" number, my phone popped her picture up.

Yesterday I received a call on my cell phone , they stated they were from the IRS and were " sending the cops " if I didn't reply within 24 hours .......... yeah you wait for me to reply :D

On my iPhone I use a free app called Hiya. It compares calls that come in to some database and marks them as solicitors or spoofed numbers. I have it automatically send them to voice mail.

The only problem I've had is that i have to turn it off to receive support call backs from Microsoft on Office365 admin stuff. But they usually call back within 15 minutes so it's not too bad.

I can tell it's working because I have it set up so I can answer calls from my Desktop computer. It will ring once bringing Skype to the front, then immediately goes way as the phone sends it to voice mail.

Have been using it for a month. After another month, if it is not trapping any good calls with have it start blocking them instead of sending them to voice mail. Or I may make a recording of the number not in service thing and put that on my voice mail greeting.

this has been my policy for quite some time

You can spoof it to look like the White House is calling.

I screen calls on our land line unless I recognize the number or the caller. We don't have a cell signal where we live. Call ID does a pretty good job. We get calls where caller ID announces "out of area", and the number displayed has our area code and local prefix. I got one the other day that was from "Invalid Number." WTF ???

Same policy here but the home phone got so bad it was unusable.

Don't know what list we got on but the damn thing would ring 30 x's a day.

masraum 03-16-2018 01:53 PM

Using VOIP makes it super easy to put pretty much any name you want on callerid assuming your provider will let you pass anything along.

T-mobile has come out with a new service (that's free and automatic, I think) where calls from numbers that they have on a list of known issues show up as "scam likely".

scottmandue 03-16-2018 02:10 PM

We are on cell phones only, add me to the "don't answer calls I don't recognize".
I must have around 50 numbers in my contacts list, if you are not on the list I don't need to talk to you.

rwest 03-16-2018 02:16 PM

The problem I found is if you don’t answer, they just keep calling over and over again. I usually tell them that the person they asked for (me) no longer lives here and surprisingly that seems to work.

I also turned my ringer down so low that I only hear it in the same room and it doesn’t wake me up if I go to bed early.

I would like to see a law passed that made it illegal to spoof phone numbers (and IP's) and require caller ID for all businesses with actual business names displayed
