Scotch?

The cigar thread got me thinking. A good friend of mine has been appointed a judge for the Supreme Court of BC and as a congrats gift I want to get him a bottle of Scotch.

I'm not a Scotch drinker in fact I have advised my friends not to offer me a shot as I know it will be wasted.

Can any of you suggest a good bottle to gift him? Take it easy on me $$$$$ I'm just a guy from Saskatchewan. SmileWavy

Peaty? Then try Laphroig, the older the better I think the cheapest is the 10 year and is around 45 US.

So Supreme Court you should probably go for the 50 year.

Just kidding;

Perhaps try Laphroaig Cairdeas Madeira Cask (2016 Edition) 230 usd.

Quite viscous, oily and even waxy. Colour dark orange. Madeira hogsheads have certainly affected the colour less so the nose.
Nose - peat smoke, ash and a bit briney. The Madeira cask is very much in the background. Lacks the usual Laphroaig ortho and meta cresol medicinal or TCA aromas.
Palate - initial sweetness overpowered by salt and smoke. Sweetness is in the background. Chilli spiciness very prominent. Oily and waxy.
Finish - fruitiness a bit more prominent as smoke fades. Tannic, astringent. Astringency is long lasting. Interestingly the strong chilli is not present in the finish.

No hint anywhere of the woodiness from the fresh wood from the hogshead ends

Supreme Court Judge? Screw the Scotch, he needs a good bootleg Rye Whiskey. Good stuff... Templeton Rye - Enjoy the Good Stuff

Not an expert - but I have had both these and they were excellent and not too crazy expensive:

Really liked:

Glenlivet Founder's Reserve. Its in a light slate blue box.

I like:
Lagavulin 16 Year
Balvenie Doublewood

Also consider a nice Japanese whisky... Same method as Scotch, but with Japanese attention to detail and a certain 'In the know' cool factor. Look for Suntory Hibiki 17, it's really nice for someone who like Scotch. It'll really stand out and it's a nice looking bottle.

There is such a WIDE variety of single malt scotches you really need to get more information. First....does it even like scotch? If so, then does he prefer the "peaty" scotches or the other, smoother kind. Here is some perspective:

Very peaty scotches such as those made on the coast or an island like Islay (Laphroaig is an Islay scotch) are peaty. No offense to fans of peaty scotch, but it tastes like burning tires mixed with turpentine. Respectfully, I have not yet developed a taste for the peaty scotches.

Highland scotches are WAY different. Very smooth. Two days ago I picked up a bottle of Aberlour and it's tasty but otherwise unremarkable. Under $50. Aged twice, the second time in used sherry casks. Macallans is one of my favorites. Mind, you, these are not very expensive scotches.

Age is beauty, with scotches (and men ;) ). So.....find out (if you can) whether he like the peaty scotches, and then get him the oldest bottle you can afford.

Makes a lot of sense. I'll ask some of our other friends and see if I can find out which he prefers.

This man knows the subject.

I would add Balvenie Caribbean Cask to the list as an 'approachable' scotch. Lots of vanilla, smooth.

Also consider a fine Bourbon. Lots of good craft whisky out there.

Forget the scotch, that’s just Scotland’s name for whiskey. He’s not on the Scottish Supreme Court. Stick with a motherland brand distilled in Gimli. Crown Royal Extra Rare at $180 a bottle US will do the trick(distilling moved from Waterloo to Gimli about 15 years ago).

The Glover, named after 19th century Scottish industrialist Thomas Blake Glover after the time he spent in Japan helping to build up that nation, is a blending of Japanese and Scottish whiskies to create two new hybrid bottlings. One, The Glover 22 Year Old, is a very limited release while the other, The Glover 14 Year Old, is available in slightly larger numbers.

This third release of whisky named after the 'Scottish Samurai' Thomas Blake Glover is made up of whiskies from Scotland and Japan that are at least 18 years old. Another fine fusion celebrating the history and friendship these countries share.
Interesting choice.

I've had one Japanese made whiskey and it was very good, tasted like a blend of good Whiskey and Bourbon half and half.

What is a UNION GUY doing drinking $50 a bottle Scotch. YOU CAN NOT AFFORD SUCH LUXURY's. Not when the average American family has $4190.00 in Savings..

Here you go a nice Clan MacGregor for $13.99 for 1.75L...go knock yourself out..why you can even invite some friends over.

http://www.totalwine.com/scotch/blended-scotch/clan-macgregor/p/2736175-1?glia=true&s=1201&pid=cpc:Shopping+US+NEVA+ENG+SP ART:::google:&gclid=CjwKCAjwq_vWBRACEiwAEReprJQvtu bLiiGnk-TjSnIbvoSbcrDgc90PgIC_eIAcVl5kmSihAY5fXhoCQfgQAvD_ BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

And you wonder why America is so fked up , when Americans have such pretensions to luxury.
