Trip to New York?
Our daughter got a work assignment in New York so we are planning a trip mid October.
The plan is to fly into New York, visit daughter, see some sites, jump on Amtrac to Lancaster PA to see the Amish for a day or two, back on Amtrac to Washington DC and spend a couple days visiting the monuments/museums. I have been to DC and know my way around there a bit. Wife lived in NY for a year or so (a long time ago) so knows her way around a bit. My thoughts on DC is it would seem we could get around with mass transit (airport to hotel on train, hotel to the mall on train, circle the mall with a buss pass like I did last time I was there). I'm hoping to do the same in NY (airport to hotel train and get around town on the subway) Not sure how to work Amish county have them pick us up at the Amtrac station in a horse drawn buggy?. Maybe rent a car, the Amish have tourist info I'm sure they have some tips. Speaking of tips, I know a bunch of you live in or visit NY/DC so any advice would be appreciated. TIA

What airport are you arriving at in NY. You can take the airtrain from JFK to the connecting subway in Jamaica but it will take you quite a while to get to the city. There is no train at LaGuardia you would have to take a bus or taxi to Astoria and take the train from there again it will take quite some time.

My daughter went to college in Kutztown which is in and near Amish country. Aside from the Lancaster farms and Mennonite markets there isn't really much to see even if you go here:
The Amish Experience | at Plain & Fancy Farm.

The NYC airporter bus goes from LGA to grand central for $16 and JFK for $18. I think you can buy a round trip for even less.

I don't find LGA hard to get to the city from. there are express buses that take you to different places, e.g. I usually take the Q70 to Roosevelt Avenue in Jamaica (I think) and then the subway to Brooklyn or wherever from there. That's a great neighborhood to explore eating, by the way.

There are Amish where I live - I am good friends with a few. We are 60 miles south of DC.
If you can stretch it a bit, there is a very large Amish Auction here the first week in November - thousands of people attend during the day, including Amish from all over the East. It really is a great experience and I can introduce you to the locals.

You can also fly in to Newark (EWR) and take either NJ Transit or Amtrak trains to Penn Station in the city. The Air train from the terminals stops at the NJ Transit station by the airport. If is pretty inexpensive as well, around $12.

FYI Lancaster essentially shuts down on Sundays (Amish type stuff anyways).
The train museum thing is pretty neat. Beautiful landscape. Lancaster requires a vehicle thought. little towns few miles apart from each other. For some fantastic snack sticks (beef, etc) hit the market across from Kitchen Kettle Village. Many different flavors.

If you're going to be staying in Bk...Fly into JFK. If you're going to the UES / UWS / Harlem / Queens...Fly into LGA. If you're going to be staying in Fidi / Lower East Side / Midtown...Fly into EWR. |

Or fly into whichever is cheapest and book an Uber. The difference between tickets to the three will more than cover the cost.

I will say that I've redeemed FF miles to EWR and had to go to Astoria after midnight on a weekend is rough. An Uber will circumvent that problem, though. Last edited by AFC-911; 03-25-2018 at 07:17 PM.. |
