Fat (4") Bicycle tires, what's the deal?

I've seen a few of these around. The few that I've seen, I don't remember thinking "hey, look an electric bike". But I do remember thinking "those most be heavy and make riding a pain". I guess they may smooth out the bumps better. It seems to me more like some sort of visual aesthetic fad or is there a good reason, maybe under certain circumstances. The bikes that I've seen them on look like 26" tired street cruisers. The tires appear to be 4" wide.

It a big thing in my area for the snow and dirt trails. I guess they are great on the beach in the sand.

I would have guessed a lot of resistance in snow and sand and no fun at all. Until:

I'm on a committee thru our State Parks Commission for "Winter Recreation". Recent discussions on which groomed trails they should be allowed on - either "motorized" or "non-motorized" trails.

A year ago, at our winter weekend meeting, a rental outfit scheduled us a demo ride at a state park near Winthrop, WA.......I loved it. Was almost as effortless as riding my Mtn bike on pavement. Now, just waiting for the price to drop. Those aren't cheap....

Was the demo on snow or pavement Bob?

I've seen them down at the beach bike path a lot. Seems like they'd be a lot of work to pedal, but maybe it's all in the gearing.

I kinda figured that was the case Byron. When they have knobby treads on 'em they sound as loud as a big 4x4 pickup truck.

Sorry, it was on a groomed snow trail. Trail used mainly by cross country skiers....

They are okay in snow and sand, but about like dragging a boat anchor behind you

Snow and sand makes total sense, float on top and probably get a better contact patch, but there is no snow or sand anywhere near where I've seen them.

So, Byron, what's the story with the barbecue photos you keep posting? Did I miss a thread. I've seen too many different photos of different Porsche parts for that to not be your stash. Say it ain't so, or at least that it was insured.

The pic you posted is of a show bike that may be fit to cruise the beach boulevard or pub alley. That is NOT a serious fat bike built for rough terrain and soft surfaces including sand and snow. That said, a proper fat bike is a serious exercise machine and can be used dual purpose, for example for hunting. It is just a mountain bike with low gears and fat tires.

Cheers,

G

Snow and Sand yes, all other applications it's just for looks. 4.8's on my winter machine.

Saw a guy my age doing incredible on a fat tire bike. Same trail I was on. He was fast! He said he does it for the extra workout. When he races on his other bike it feels so fast and nimble.
