5 years

Boy's gotten a LOT bigger (taller than me now, still growing at 14!) and the fish have gotten bigger too :)

First pic is 5 years ago today at the Cedar Key Fl (a drinking town with a fishing problem), second was taken earlier today not too far away at Shell Mound boat ramp/dock

Mine is the same age. Since I hate fishing the boy does not get to enjoy it like your does. I am keeping him in a closet now and feeding him little so he stops growing.

Cedar Key you say? Any tips you can share? We have been toying with heading there for a long weekend.

Lodging, do not miss restaurants / bars things to do?

Don't blink or you'll miss the city and end up in the gulf.

It is a drinking town with a fishing problem, and an minor arts infestation.

Unless it is one of the arts festival weekends. Or the seafood festival weekend. Or biker season.

There are only a few restaurants to choose from. They are all pretty OK, I like Steamer's best for burgers and beer selection. Nice view over the pier and gulf as well.

Fishing? City pier is OK- just bounce the bottom with a few oz of lead and a hunk of shrimp or squid on a 2/0 circle hook. For the first time in the 40+ years I've been going there, I went to Shell Mound instead of the city pier. Did really well too. There is also teh #4 bridge you can fish off of, just getting into town on the left side - you'll see it.

Don't forget that you need a shoreline saltwater license for the pier, the bridge, or at the dock at Shell Mound. Any place actually that you can't get to by foot and keep your feet dry (this is a free license, to go around the Fed rules of requiring a state issued license. One of the few things you'll get free from the state!). If you want to paddle out in a kayak to fish, you'll need a "real" S/W fishing license. Kids under 16 do not need licenses.

Good times!

I am taking my 16 year old to the Deschutes tomorrow. Big, angry, native trout.

I am completely in the clear when it comes to needing a fishing license, I hate fishing. I wish I was joking, I grew up doing it, out of necessity, maybe that is the reason I am not a fan anymore, seems like a task to me more than something relaxing.

Sounds like a cool little place for a quick weekend I will look into it again, I had plans a couple of months ago and had to cancel, couple we were going over with had a death in family and had to back out.

We spent 2 nights in Micanopy a few years back, not much to do but a nice relaxing cute town. We stayed in the 1800's era mansion which was a b&B for 2 nights.

Thanks for the info.

Does Travis McGee still live at Cedar Key?
