outlaws vs in-laws & a crashed Ferrari

Aston Villa: Lewis Grabban’s brother crashed new Ferrari into tree

I'd never let any of my relations drive my 356 (except my brother, but that is only because he learned how to drive in it before I did... and even now it is sketchy) and there is NO WAY I'd ask one of 'em to sign for a 460k car!

Wow, they aren't dicking around with punishment over there.

And the crazy thing is that the brother in law didn't drive the car because he'd injured his wrist, his buddy did. And his buddy claimed "I've driven a Porsche before, so I can handle this."

I used to refer to most of my in-laws as outlaws because ... reasons. Almost all of them have passed now.

My one surviving brother-in-law is a good guy. He and my late father-in-law are the only ones of the bunch who I would allow to drive my cars/trucks.

Way back when I first got my 911SC it was pretty nervous to drive - the tires were old and rock hard. My B-I-L had driven my TVR plenty so I had no reservations letting him take the 911 for a ride. He never asked to drive it again.

Years later he told me that he went into a sharp right hander to fast, lost traction at the front tires, backed out of the throttle and snap - spun. He ended up stalled and facing the wrong way, but in the middle of the road.

No harm done, but he said he about stained his pants.

I let my dad take out my mom in my modified Corvette.

Dad had to ride a few times first, I explained, this is half throttle in 1st gear(the tires are spinning).

This is 3/4 throttle in 2nd gear(the tires are spinning).

Power doesn't catch up to grip until 70MPH in a straight line.

The rough thing, the day they took it out I kept getting adds for car crash lawyers all day, not sure how/why but it didn't help!

The article doesn't really say why the driver and passenger are being punished. Did they have permission to drive the car or not? That seems to be the most important fact to me.

In the U.S., the car is insured, the owner's insurance would take care of the repairs and the damage to the property crashed into. The driver may or may not get cited in a case like this.

Quote:
Despite the fact he wasn’t insured to drive such a high powered vehicle, he told O’Donnell he had driven a Porsche in the past and would be able to handle it.
I'm not sure if this line is implying that insurance in Australia is with the driver, not the car or if drivers must be rated for a vehicle's power. Either way, it's kind of crazy.

Australia is such a weird place that it's hard to understand any of this from an American POV.

He wasn't "going to be home on the day of delivery", so he had his BIL take delivery of the car?

WTF. They only deliver new Ferraris to your house in that country? Like a UPS package? Do they not have this new fangled thing called a ****ing dealership? In California, you have to take delivery of any new car, (or used car from dealership), at the dealership. No exceptions. Doesn't matter how much of a big shot or celebrity you are. We sold Eddie Murphy a new 928 in '86, he was seriously pissed that he had to come to dealership to sign papers. He thought he could just do the whole thing over the phone or through his assistants. Countless other stars and big shots bought cars but did not make a stink about taking delivery @ dealer.

The guy who drove it into tree got 12 months of "community order"(?), which does not mean community service because he also got x-number of "unpaid work". What a weird place.

Anyhow, you can't fix schit-for-brains. And that car is for parts, now.

My brother-in-law begged his dad to let him take a spin in his then-new Elise a while back and my bro-in-law ended up crashing it into a ditch. My father-in-law lives in the French countryside and whenever we're all there for Christmas and the the sun peaks out for a brief moment, it's always awkward to see my father-in-law toss my wife the keys and tell us to "go enjoy the weather before it starts raining again."

To be fair, my wife used to be the marketing director for a dealer group that owns all the exotic franchises so she's driven everything from regular 911s to a Pagani Huayra and has a lot of seat time in all the new Mclaren products since the 12C. It's still so emasculating to see my bro-in-law in that situation.

So the guy was authorized to sign for it to take delivery, but not to drive it? Odd, and they must handle insurance differently there.

Having it delivered to the house is not that unusual, but couldn't they wait until the guy was home to get it. I know plenty of people who have consummated the purchase of a new car at home, but they had to sign the stuff themselves. It is not like signing for a box of candy being delivered or something

All took place a few miles north of me.... in the UK. The link takes you an Oz media see, however it took place in the UK.

Home delivery of such cars is pretty normal here. The car is delivered like a parcel and anybody you nominate can 'sign for it'.....the registration and ownership is already sorted (in person) before delivery.

The person who signs for it may well not be covered by the owner's insurance. Why should they be? They are signing for a parcel, not to drive the car.

Over here you can have a number of different policies; cover for the person to drive any car with permission, cover for the owner to drive the car plus named drivers, cover for anyone to drive the car with permission. Clearly in this case the insurance cover did not extend to the person who was actually driving the car. Its a criminal offence here to drive a car without insurance.

I’ve owned my Speedster since 1973 and exactly 3 people have driven it in that time. I care about my car, this owner obviously didn’t.

Definitely weird but this was all in the UK. The owner was an Aston Villa man.

Soccer star taking delivery of a brand new Ferrari doesn’t strike me as a “love my car” kinda guy. He’ll just buy another.

The one time I let someone drive my SC (in 28 years of ownership) he almost put it into the K Rail in wet conditions while on the way to Cars and Coffee......never again.
