Camping and Spooning
One of my guy friends mentioned this weekend that he'd like our group to get together for a camping trip and go shooting. What he's implying is that he'd like me to plan a trip.
![]() I've been doing some online searches and found two suitable campgrounds in Ohio (Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH and Miller's Campground & Gun Club in Waynesville, OH). I'd like to know if anyone here knows of places where I can do camping and shooting? Ideally, I'd like to meet all of these requirements: 1) The camping and shooting don't have to be at the same place, just close by. 2) I'd like to stay within two states of Illinois, so that means Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio. 3) I'd like there to be other activities in the area, like hiking. 4) Tent camping, not an RV park. I'll take the ideas back to the group and see where it goes.

I find that spooning on a camping trip requires sleeping bags that zip together....
If you like boating, I'd suggest Missouri, Lake of the Ozarks. I'm sure there is an online guide for tent camping spots. Northern New York used to be great, in the Adirondacks. But these days...

May I suggest Camp-Spoon-A-Lot. It's on Lake Rainbow.

I heard "camping and spooning" and I thought of a canoe trip in West Virginia with an unfortunate ending.

Spearpoint Ranch Firearms Training Weekend Seminars | Barnard, KS
https://www.1kplus.com/ https://www.mycountyparks.com/County/Union/Park/Three-Mile-Recreational-Area/Facility/High-Lakes-Outdoor-Alliance-Shooting-Range.aspx I like the last link a lot. Plenty of variety in shooting and in the area. I'd find the right range first and then call them for camping options in the surrounding area. Sounds like fun!

I'm not sure I would have went with the thread title
![]() Northern MI would be my pick for camping and shooting. Not to mention, if you're into beer they have a lot of craft breweries in MI as well. Last edited by cabmandone; 03-29-2018 at 01:02 PM.. |

Where specifically in Northern MI? And I assume that you still mean the land of trolls?

Iowa has some really awesome hiking areas in the northeastern part of the state along the IA/WI border on the Mississippi River. Everything else further west isn't worth the travel if you want hiking although the shooting options get better the further you go into Iowa. Forget Nebraska for hiking unless you go way out west which is quite a journey into no man's land.
An area I've never been but always wanted to go is Yellow River State Forest. They have tent camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, equestrian trails, etc. Here is the website: Yellow River State Forest And about 30 miles up the road is a pistol and rifle range with trap, clays and skeet here: Chase the Adventure | 1838 Middle Calmar Rd. Check National Forests - here in Florida most of our larger ones have shooting ranges that are maintained to some degree and open to the public at no cost.
A quick google maps search for "national forest rifle range near ohio" shows me 4 in ohio alone. https://www.google.com/maps/search/national+forest+rifle+range+near+ohio/@39.6084176,-84.6716234,7z And more than you can shake a stick at in Pennsylvania - https://www.google.com/maps/search/national+forest+rifle+range+near+pennsylvania/@40.3819251,-80.6507556,7z Depending on what kind of shooting you like to do you may want to find a large event and time it to coincide with that (Camp Perry, Knob Creek MG shoot, a run-n-gun competition, etc) Last edited by id10t; 03-29-2018 at 07:43 PM.. |
