Playing DVD's on my computer

I have a set of DVD's I watch at home and at lunch break at work (folk Style wrestling before minds go in the gutter). Anyhow, when I watch at work I am able to point to a line that scrolls across the bottom of the screen and easily move forward or backwards. At home, once and while it allows me to do this. Most of the time I have to use the forward and reverse arrows which are not very efficient. Considering I know my PC at home can do it, why does it not do the line at the bottom all the time? Is there some way for me to make that function permanent? When I put a disc in, a icon that looks like a few disks pops up on the screen. It says Roxio (maybe RoxID) on the bottom of the Icon.

Thanks for any suggestions. Sorry for the vagueness, computers are a strong point of mine (still looking :))

Roxio is the creator of a DVD software set for PCs. You should be able also use Windows Media player. Try that, it will probably be more stable and work better.

I guess you should tell us what version of Windows you're using at home because that may actually change the answer.

I'd also consider using VLC - it is the ultimate in media players.

I agree with VLC Media Player, it can play pretty much anything. Sometimes on DVD's there will not be files ending in AVI or MPEG or MP4 so you have to look at the directories and usually one will be names "audio" and one named "video". The video files will automatically mix in the sound when you play them.

If you want to keep the files off the DVD's download a free software program called HandBrake and you can convert the DVD files to MKV or MP4.
