Dog DNA testing. Mutt owners only I suppose.

We have a mutt. We can guess all day what he consists of. We were told he is half Aussie Shepherd - half white labrador.

He acts like a Shepherd and fetches like a lab. Very goofy looking for sure.

Anyone sent in for clarification? I see it in my wife’s search history. It could happen.

And whoever came up with the business is brilliant. People love dog!

Hi Vash,

I had my long time foster dog (Tundra, rip)tested, because everybody would ask and I was curious. I heard that the saliva test is very hard to do accurately on a dog, so I had the vet do it by a blood draw.

If I remember correctly it was a bit over a hundred dollars, although the vet was the one that he went to for water therapy and because they loved him so much and he was with a rescue, we always got a good discount.

RIP Tundra! Dogs are fantastic. They aren’t handicapped with insecurities and self conscious thoughts. Tundra is a perfect example.

No kidding Vash, no limits with him, he was fearless and once he was in that cart, he thought he was a regular dog.

RW, how much was that test?

I am a bit curious about this one, supposed to be a Dutch Shepherd, according to the shelter and my vet. He is 10 months old, about 85#, sort of odd habitus. Loong torso, hind legs longer than the front. Gives him a bit of a hitch in his getalong when he walks, but he can really cover ground at a gallop. I bet he could clear a six foot fence and not even touch it. He is bigger than we expected he would be already. Dutch is supposed to be more of a 60-70# dog, this guy is shaping up to be more of a miniature pony. These pictures are from December when he was closer to 65#, those are 8" tiles on the floor.

Lets just judge dogs by the content of their character and not their genetic markers :)

Mine is mostly mutt with maybe some mutt-mutt heritage mixed in somewhere.

We had Sophie done as we were curious as well. We got an email saying the swab was inconclusive and they would send out another kit. Then, magically a week later they sent a analysis from the original sample saying she was mostly German Sheppard. part Border Collie and a smidge of Pug. I think it is a hoax, they never sent the second kit. Here is a picture of my German Sheppard/ Pug. Lol.

If you do send it in...be prepared for surprising results.
My sister sent in two tests for her dogs. Both came back as almost unbelievable.

I have a GSD/LAB/CHOW mix people we got her from had both parents

looks like the white first dog pictured but is black with a white chest spot minus the trolly

crusty does your dog chase small critters
as looks like she has some jack russell in her tree

I think she is a cross between Dalmatian, Whippet and Jack Russel. Very fine short hair, long narrow head, skinny long tail.

Hi Tobra,

It was a bit over a $100, but the rescue did get a discount, I want to say around $150 regular price, check with your vet.

I felt pretty good with the blood draw test as two of the breeds made good sense from our guesses.

The only reason I would need to DNA test a mutt is to ensure there was no cat in the mix ;)

I've never met a dog that I didn't connect with....less than a handful of cats however....and they thought they were dawgs :)

ckelly78z 04-01-2018 04:18 PM

My dog is my big Shweety, he is a male 70# Aussie lap dog that fetchs, and herds, or some mix thereof. I don't care, just like I don't need to contact Ancestry.com to figure out who I am.

cstreit 04-01-2018 06:56 PM

We did the same with our rescue - she's a goofy looking thing and we wanted to know.

30% Beagle. 30% Jack Russel/Boston Terrier, 30% "other"
