some dude tried to buy my hammer.
wtf?
i have a pretty rustic hammer. helped out at a fence build. brought my hammer. wildfire stuff, for a friend. there was a decent sized group there. man, i put that thing away in my truck and grabbed a beater laying around. he was eyeballing it too hard. i had no idea Douglass went away..slowing trying to come back i think. small batch stuff. my wife bought it for me as incentive to get off my ass to build our own fence at our old home. i bet my hammer is 20 years old. freaking miracle i haven't lost it yet. i love it for the side pull notch. and the reverse waffles on the head..i cant stand the exposed waffles that tear into your skin if you hit a thumb. smash is acceptable..smash and rip, not so much.

Hammer time. it is actually the first thing my wife (girlfriend) bought me. i handled it way differently than if i had bought her a frying pan.

Oh, pretty!
And it’s got the side puller! I’d steal it. Of course, you’re lucky he was an amateur. He made a big deal and spooked you. He should of ignored it until you didn’t notice him slip it in his tool bag. What a rookie.

So, you should have told him “You Can’t touch this!”!

We have been slowly digging through my parents stuff... poking around in the garage I found a very old ball peen hammer, I brought it home and hung it on my tool wall. Not sure why, can't imagine what I would ever use it for. Also picked up a small tack hammer.

I didn't know you could spend that kind of money on a hammer.
I have my dad's old ball peen hammer. It's probably older than I am. It has a special place in my tool box and is used whenever something doesn't want to give when it should.

I see it variously identified as a framing hammer and a finish hammer. It doesn't look like the tool I'd want to be whacking spikes with. How heavy is it?

I watched a framer working one time. I swear his hammer was 2 feet long and weighed a ton. It was a simple pleasure watching him drive spikes with 3 good whacks.

As a very young lad one of the first things ever my dad taught me was to let the hammer do the work. Even today as I struggle with just about any tool, I remind myself of that advice and everything gets easy-peasy. The hardest part with a hammer was my aim. Practice helped me reduce hitting the wrong nail. Pain was also a good motivator, of course.

I have a hammer my grandfather gave me. It's all steel and the grip is slowly letting go. I use as is and wont change. I smile inside whenever I use it.

Especially if hammering down, lift to a measured distance, light touch, and just guide as gravity does the work. Gravity doesn't wear out, you can hit with a measured force and nail everything just right. Especially when metal working, a measured touch is very valuable. Probably my worst hammer experience is when I was assigned an ipod welding young person with music, he couldn't hit consistent, and couldn't listen. My need to re-work everything he did combined with him not catching on meant I sent him away and did the job myself. There wasn't time to teach some one with music filled earbuds in and get it done.

I've always liked the Vaughn "California Framer" with the curved hatchet handle.
