Onion plants arrived just now
2" on snow on the ground and my garden is still sod, but the onions arrived today. I have apple trees in the basement waiting for the ground to thaw so I can plant them.
 This winter is killing me.  We ordered 100 plants this year.  Last year we ordered 150 and we still have about 10 pounds of them left, and that's after my grandsons and I used about 10 pounds as ammo for our 3 man slingshot. We had a dry spell in June, and some of them stopped growing, then started again. About half of them have the brown "paper" wrapping in the middle of the onion - strange.

Any particular variety? Apparently our politicians made it illegal to import the Texas Super Sweet 1015Y variety here in GA. The Vidalia onion lobby has been hard at work.

I’ve tried a dozen different varieties and settled on Copra. They have a good taste, disease resistant, and will keep for nearly a year in a cool dark place. Can’t grow short Day varieties up here, so I’ve never tried Texas Super Sweet. I order my plants on line from Dixondale. They carry Texas super Sweet. If they won’t ship them to you Let me know. I’ll order them and send then on to you.

It's the Winter that won't quit, the ground is frozen solid anywhere there is shade.....usually the grass is greening up, and people are starting to mow in a few days.

Interesting - just ordered 1015Y's from Dixondale. First place that I haven't gotten the "Sorry - we don't/can't ship to GA message." I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't get a cancellation email.

Sample pictures of the sweet potato crop from 2 years ago - from one plant. Last year the output wasn't near as good.

WD - thanks for the lead on Dixondale. They had no issue with shipping to GA. 1015Y onions showed up on Thursday and they went in the ground Saturday!

Onions, especially the Vidalia onions seem to like a sandy soil best. It may be because the sandy soil drains off extra water better. Something else that is easy to grow are radishes. Probably an acquired taste, but I like them!

Yep. It's been cold, snowing, sleeting almost every day here. The plant's are hiding in a dark place until (or if) the ground dries out. I hope they survive.
