S&w 27-2 .357/38

Went to the range today for a couple hours to work on shooting with my P226 and took a 1978 SW 27-2 along for the heck of it. Have shot it very little, never hit much with it. Inherited from father in law. Not sure he ever really shot it either.

Well as some may recall I've recently started paying attention to the basics of pistol shooting and am finding some real (basic) success with it now. Well it turns out this wheelgun is a friggin tack driver. Shot the last 25 or so rounds of 38spl I had. double action wasn't that hard to be accurate with and single action is an extremely light pull. didn't try double tap type stuff but this again is a whole new world of shooting. I always thought 'well it's neat but doesn't hit anything so i'll move on'. Really is something when you humble yourself and open the mind to instruction.

This picture isn't my actual gun but looks identical. 6" barrel.

Am now considering trading an unused shotgun towards a GP100 Match something or other Ruger.

BTW I ran out of 38spl and opened a box of .357 mag I had. Like a cannon compared to the 38 and actually hurt the bone at the base of the thumb when you get high up on the grip. Bullseye accuracy though.

just cause I like pics here's the Sig. I'm beginning to think I could shoot faster without the red dot. I think the technique is a bit different. had a nice chat with Rick Lee recently about Sigs and I'm sorta kinda watching the auction sites for an inexpensive 226 to add to the safe. they really just feel like quality.

357 magnum revolvers generally will measure how strong your hand and arm are. I have a model 66 called a "Hog Hunter" that was worked over by the custom shop and also one of the 8 shooters, an early TRR8. Both are bad kickers but the noise they make will make all the shooters at the range stop and look. I think it is due to the blast from the muzzle and the small gap between the cylinder and barrel?

We also have a red dot on the model 66 and is super accurate with both eyes open, hits where the dot is!

The older S&W are awesome wheelspoons. I have a 28-2 with the 6" barrel and it too is a tack driver. Dad has a Model 27 with a 4" that I grew up shooting and only recently started shooting semi-autos. I could pluck its own CCI aluminum brass standing on a board at 20 yards with it.

High on my list of wheel spoons... however wife may get laid off from work so my toy budget may get very small very soon.

I have a newer S&W with the infamous " lock " but it's like firing a short cannon when using .357 rounds ! If you can't hit the bad guy the noise will drive him away ! Love mine in stainless steel .

We seem to favor similar spoons. I tend to prefer the factory night sites on my 226...not a fan of red dots. My 627 in SA is easily the gun I shoot most consistently.

Don't automatically dismiss a wheelgun for concealed carry. A shorty in 38 special/357 magnum has a lot of punch. Also, never had a wheelgun jam or stovepipe on me.

These are really growing on me.

Can't imagine using .357 magnum loads in a "shorty", in my friends 6" Colt it throws out what seems like a 24" fireball. (probably why there are so many use 2" .357's for sale)

Shooting his 6" .44 Colt was like holding a stick of dynamite in your hand.

Yes indeed, .357 mag out of a heavy N frame M27 with a 6" bbl is plenty of recoil....you'll change those beautiful checkered wood grips for rubber Pachmayr grips if'n you do much of that or have a raw hand. At least my M629 (.44 mag) has beautiful SMOOTH grips....doesn't help much

Hopefully, my next gun will be a 6" model 27 in nickel. Basically, exactly like the OP posted picture, but in nickel.

Saw a video of Jerry Miculek talking about revolver grip. He said his thumb is dead.

Choco I may take the red dot off my legion and see how I like it. I asked Sig about getting an extra slide but it sounds like an expensive process.

I dont have any model 27's, I do have some 357 Magnums made by SW.

I also have an older S&W in .32 that is polished nickel finish so I guess I'm a pimp daddy gangsta

. Also have a .40 semi auto it was previously owned by a CHP officer , it also is a matte finish stainless steel . I recently added a Ruger stainless steel .22 revolver I guess I have a thing for stainless

I'm clearly a gaudy desperado.

My dad was a cop in the early 70s. He had what I assume was a model 28 and had it nickel plated. That gun was stolen when our house was robbed when I was about 12. That gun "will be yours one day". My dad has passed and the gun is gone, but I still want one.

I remember you posting this years ago Steve....I'd bet it was a M19 on a K frame... it was common for LEOs to carry them back in the day, not the M27s. Get yerself a red felt hat with a big azz feather too...pimp daddy

When I go to GB or GI I am incredulous at the descriptions that are written by primarily guys who are making a living selling spoons. They miss so many of the pertinent facts, they don't know much. It is the blind leading the blind.
