DNA tests
Has anyone had a DNA test and what were your feelings about the results?
Girlfriend is slightly interested, but I said there is some small print that says the results are the property of the DNA testing company. That put her off to some degree. Not that I'm involved in anything dodgy but I don't like the idea of my DNA being "sold" to police departments. And whenever there is a crime my DNA would get run through the computer with all the others. Plus you may get contact from "who would have thought I have a cousin in Nigeria" who would love to meet me but their vast fortune is locked up and needs money to release. Me, myself, I know that I'm half English, half Scottish, and half German. So not much to find out. |

Ancestry DNA are sitting on a goldmine.
"Me, myself, I know that I'm half English, half Scottish, and half German" That'd make you that 1.5 people we all hear about.

Good set of gloves, disposable jump suite, and a couple gallons of bleach...
Oh... That is not what this thread is about...

But seriously,
My wife was born in Seoul Korea and as a baby and brought to America so has no idea of her health history. (One company that does DNA says they can your analyse your family health history) I need to talk to her about looking into it.

They already have my fingerprints for when I was younger. They didn't like my attempt to use one of the new guard rails that curves up from the ground as rap to put my 4x4 on 2 wheels. Think 70mph was a bit fast for the attempt.

I dont know the law in NZ, but in the US, once the company has your DNA, it can be sought by the state with a simple court order. To be compelled to get a DNA test is much more onerous.

Cell phone companies already have your facial scans, fingerprints, voice recognition and location at any give time. Why not give your DNA? I don't know how hard it is for the information to be accessed, probably not impossible.

True Dat. I was given the Ancestry DNA kit for Christmas. I always thought I was mainly German and English. Per Ancestry I am 50% Irish, 20 Scandinavian and the rest English and Western European ? Who Knew but kind of interesting I thought ?
As to the police and my DNA ? At this point in my life that is about the least of my worries.

I had mine done - no surprise
I'm 100% Greek or so I thought. both of my grandmothers came from the same village and both grandfathers came from the same area. I'm 60% Greek, 30% West Asian ( Turkey, Iran, etc), 10% eastern European which includes 3% Jewish. I attribute my background to Alexander The Great.

One of my daughters gave my wife 23 and Me about five years ago. Spit in the tube and send it in, then you receive an email with a link a few weeks later. 23 and Me runs hundreds of tests on disease and traits in addition to the family history (the FDA prohibited them from sharing disease and medical risk, but that has recently been overturned). I then did it about four years ago. The military already knows more about me than I like, so who cares if my DNA is spread around more than I did when I was younger. Turns out, she’s 47% Ashkenazi Jew with the potential to carry genes responsible for breat and uterine cancer, however, we now know she doesn’t carry those genes. You also have the option of various degrees of public sharing of your family lineage. There are many adopted folks looking to connect with their genetic families and at least sharing your code anonymously allows them to research. I discovered (actually my sister did who is really into the whole thing) a first cousin who had been given up for adoption when she was a baby (talk about exposing a dark family secret, that had real firework). As for the Vikings, I though I had the same Scottish, English, German mix as Bill. My family can trace my mom’s side back to 1625 when they arrived to the colonies from England. Her father was 100% German. Seems my father who always claimed pure Scottish blood and that William Wallace (Wallace being his mom’s maiden name) was a direct ancestor was a little off. Seems we are more mongrel than that as I carry 23% Scandinavian blood with the high likelihood that Vikings ransacked our little Scottish village at some point in our history. BTW, this is the advantage of being male and carrying the same Y chromosomes, passed down over he centuries. Who knew?

I am pretty secure with who I am, and am not searching for that long lost royal lineage, I would be hoping to find.

Fairly much the same around here. But the police have been proven to be a bit sneaky and not abide by the rules. |

My wife had hers done, then we did mine, about 96% north European, less than 2% native American, and some Neanderthal, no surprises. I already knew the families came here in the 1600s.
