You got lucky, normally that destroys at least one of the arms holding the awning up. I very very very rarely leave the awning out around camp if no one is going to be there as them getting destroyed used to be a fairly common occurance with how quick the weather can changer here at altitude.

Hey Hugh! Congrats and welcome Milton!

Awning will be an easy fix.

Have enjoyed checking in on you trip.

My inlaws like to keep their camper awning up the whole time they are camping because they have "tie-downs". I prefer to retract it at night, and if we won't be there for a few hours. I have seen too many awnings flipped up, and over the RV, with ruined arms.

That bus body is ripped right off the frame.

There is a cross-over between east-bound and west bound right there. I wonder if the dump truck was using it and pulled into the path of the bus.

News says multiple injuries. Kids were on a field trip. Pretty horrific.

Porchdog 05-17-2018 12:53 PM

Reports suggest that the bus missed it's exit and tried to make an illegal U turn, but was rear ended by the dump truck.

At least 2 dead.

That's horrible.

Hugh R 05-18-2018 02:14 PM

Visual suggests you might be correct on the illegal u turn thing. Looks like the dump truck hit on his left side and tore the front of the bus off. Apparently neither driver died which is incredible.

We’d driven the rental car from PA to Greenwich, CT for the day and it totally effed up our day.

Now in Gettysburg,PA with the RV.

Edit: live and learn on the awning. Normally I don’t keep it open when away, but it had rained for three days and I wanted to dry it out, and the weather app said it was going to be a nice clear day.

A teacher and a 5th grader died in that accident, and apparently most of the other 43 or so kids were hurt, too--some critically.

Gettysburg, the Cyclorama is very cool. Amazing place to visit, 7,000 Americans died in 3 days and another 4,000 of wounds/infections within another few weeks. I highly recommend the guided bus 2 hour tour.,

We did the ghost tour about 20 years ago.

When I was at Sikorsky as the lead government pilot, one of the guys that worked for me was a USMC Major who was also a Civil War historian.

He was my lead CH-53E pilot and we had to put 25 hours on the E prior to delivery to the Marines.

Joe would fly me on really detailed tours of Gettysburg, Manassass (1 &2) and other sites in the E. He would narrate in detail as we flew over the battlefields.

The Civil War was the first modern weapons war and the result was carnage on a level not experienced previously.

Poor cell service at Elk Neck State park in MD today and tomorrow. Headed to the Delaware Shore tomorrow and Wednesday. Seahawk’s crib on Thursday for a few days.

It is really interesting to see late civil war photos around Richmond, with the earthworks. They look like they could be out of WWI. Giant trenches.

The Korean War was the first war where more people died of their wounds than infections.

I guess those MASH units really did the trick.

Not to mention antibiotics.

I have never verified this, but I was told no one died from infection at Pearl Harbor.

In the early 70's my 5th grade teacher taught us about the Civil War, and in order to convey just how horrible it was he mentioned that there were so many bullets in the air at one time that Gettysburg actually had an artifact where two had become fused as one.

About 40 years later I visited the museum, really curious if he'd been telling the truth...

Delaware Beach State Park. It’s nice to see other states that actually (than CA, which pretty much doesn’t) maintain their state parks.
