Carpenter/wood Glue?

my wife somehow destroyed a bathroom vanity drawer while i was away for the weekend.

in her defense, the PO of the house didnt spend any real money on the fixture. we have all seen it..nice facade, crap particle board interior. i need to cobble it together for the relatively short duration before the remodel. (it got pushed back when all the contractors got super busy and super expensive due to our wildfire). my wife loaded the drawer down with various emollients.

so i need wood glue. holy random selections!! i am used to the ubiquitous elmers wood glue. the guy at the store said just to buy the plain jane WHITE elmers glue i saw my friend Horatio eat in 2nd grade. errr..no. he said it is just as strong. i just grabbed some DAP stuff and left. there is some super expensive stuff out there..i was not gonna use it to stick particle board back together.

on the bright side..the project required me to buy a brand new set of bar clamps

what's your take on wood glue?..i cant see any fail.

I always just reach for Titebond when I'm spending my woodglue dollars. They have a lot of flavors, I seem to be drawn to the yellow waterproof mostly, just out of tradition.

I'll be interested to hear from others about failures and successes....

Big fan of Elmer's PROBOND. Professional strength, wood glue.
Had the same bottle/dispenser (12 oz) for at least 20 years.

Last project was my granddaughters student desk in February, and the glue still works like gangbusters.

Even Elmers white is probably stronger than the particle board it is sticking to.
If it's hidden spot, add L-brackets and glue on a sheet of luan board underneath (buy small pieces at local Ace)
Repaint inside or cover with drawer liner and it never happened.

great idea!!

i was thinking of adding bulkheads and compartmentalize that drawer..for strength.
Luan board..check!

If you need wood glue and only wood glue, plain white Elmer's is as good as anything else. You're wasting your money buying more expensive wood glue.

The difference comes if the wood is exposed to moisture. Elmer's is water soluble and remains soluble after it dries. If your application is never going to get wet, then Elmer's is the way to go. If it will be exposed to moisture, you need something else. In a bathroom Elmer's would probably last long enough to make it to your remodel, but I think you did the right thing in getting something that doesn't deteriorate when it gets wet.

Titebond. Easy to find, comes in various flavors depending on working time needed and other factors. If you want to stock one, just buy the one that does the job in the worst environement.

You should also keep a tube of Liquid Nails on hand, for assorted emergencies. Again, several flavors available...

I agree with this, I have glued wood with Elmers plain white and had the wood fail before the glued joint, only exception (again as mentioned above) if it is going to be exposed to moisture.

Elmers white is perfect for making toothpick statues when you have a couple hours to hold each piece and use a hair dryer while it sets.
Not much else though.

No amount of glue can hold up a women's emollient collection.

If memory serves, the yellow glues, Titebond etc., were made to handle the extra moisture in construction woods that aren’t dried as much as hardwoods.

I like Elmer’s white glue for when I want my glue line to be “invisible” like when I make inlays because it dries clear.

I've always trusted Liquid Nails for anything that was going to hold weight.
