dang..the world lost two humorous old dudes.

Pat McManus and Carl Kasell.

i dont think most of you know of them.

McManus was a humorist outdoor writer. he wrote about and made fun of stuff in the outdoors. i read his stuff in my early teens. flashlight under the covers type of thing. he had the best one liners..for example:

“Give a man enough rope and it still will come out 6 inches too short. That is the nature of rope, if not the nature of man."

i can probably credit him with my knife fetish..he had a knife story that was effen classic.

Carl Kasell. i ONLY knew of him as the voice on WAIT WAIT DONT TELL..that NPR radio quiz game show. super funny. he would come out of nowhere and drop a line that would make you laugh so hard. Saturday morning, i would love hearing him announce the show's host.."heeeerrrrrrreeeessss Peeeeeettttter Seagal"

i think i remember him winning some broadcast award the same year Howard Stern won it..Howard said, "who's Karl Kasell?" hahah..i didnt know of him as a serious news broadcaster. he hired Katie Kuric as an intern. (i learned this when she called in to congratulate him on his retirement..the president called as well)

he is a funny old guy. i always told myself..when i get old, i want to be more like Kasell and less like the Gran Torino dude.

this will be a short thread..just wanted to mention them as we do all the people we admire when they pass. even it if is only ME.

Well, they were important to you, and you're a part of here, so....

Sometimes I wonder if these (deceased) people would get a chuckle out of knowing they were being honored--in however a small fashion--on some car forum.

Hmmm....

McManus was from my home state, (And lived in the PNW) and since my home state is more of an outpost than a mecca, any brush with fame or celebrity was a cause for celebration, thus, his books were always reviewed prominently in the newspaper. (And he was funny AF, so even better!!)

Loved Carl Kassel. Wish I would have been lucky enough to have his voice on my home answering machine.

RIP, to two great Americans.

I remember one of the prizes on "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" was Carl Kasell doing your answering machine outgoing message...

Cliff, we also loved listening to Carl Kasell on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. Witty with a great radio voice. RIP Mr. Casell.

Patrick F. McManus!!! I have most - if not all - of his books. He even signed one of them on the inside cover. One of the funniest guys of all time.

I met Patrick F. McManus when he was following his one man play around. Got him to sign all of my books. Sad day indeed.

For sure. When I was a kid, we had a 1973 Buick station wagon. I affectionately called it the "Mountain Car". I'm going to paraphrase as this is from memory 30-40 years ago, but I loved the one story where there was a skunk under Pat's woodshed and he wanted to get Rancid Crabtree to come over and get it out. Pat's grandmother didn't like that idea and said that "it wouldn't be a fair fight".

Pat replied, "Why, because Rancid would use tools and smoke and other things to get the skunk out?".

His grandmother replied, "No, because the skunk has a brain.".

So many good stories:

The Mountain Car
Bush Pilots
They Shoot Canoes, Don't They?
Useful Outdoor Comments
The Man Who Notices Things

Sorry, but I live some Patrick F. McManus stories...

my favorite car one was the one he got Rancid to sit on the motor dribbling fuel into the carborator..all cuz the fuel pump failed..and then it started working again..the entire time he was thinking he was getting awesome gas mileage.

....or the trailer wiring one. hahaha..
