You mean Orwell was an optimist? Remember, in the end...Winston really loved Big Brother.

Tried to? They're in on the design phase. Its comedy when the FBI says they can't hack an iPhone or any other smart phone.

If you want to go incognito/off grid for a time you can:

1) Leave the cell phone at home

2) Buy a box of Pedigree Dentastix (stay with me for a second)
Give the Dentastix to your best 4 legged friend, but keep the bag they are packaged in.
Put your phone in airplane mode.
Put the phone in the Dentastix plastic/foil bag.

I dont know why Predigree packages their Dentastix in a plastic/foil bag, which happens to be a nice flexible faraday bag, but i was doing an RF test and needed to isolate a device from outside signals, puppy wanted a treat, A + B = faraday cage.

To prove that it works, place your phone (not in airplane mode) in the bag and seal.
Call you cell phone. Yep, the phone does not ring, and the caller gets the "The phone you are trying to reach is out of network" message.

If you are going to have the phone in an faraday bag for any amount of time, put it in airplane mode. If you dont have it in airplane mode, your battery will drain quickly as the phone tries to find a network.

Now if I could just solve that false RF signaling issue.....

An older Russian engineer that I once worked with had a hard time getting his head around all this passion for connectivity and lack of concern for privacy. He told me that, back in the day, the KGB dedicated untold amounts of resources to keep track of citizens in the old USSR and would've LOVED having things like smartphones, Google, Facebook, etc. around during the cold war days.

Yes, well that's why I said "imagine". In the 80s in Australia, the Federal govt proposed a national identity card. There was almost a revolt and the idea was quickly dropped. Now ofcourse, by stealth, a driving licence fulfils much the same function. Its amazing that we are all delighted to carry these intrusive smart devices- and pay for the privilege. Even more amazing that some people will stand in queues to get the newest latest, flashest pocket spy.

And yet your face is out there. Probably your vehicle tags, too. In the developed world, you're never incognito.

If you've experienced a deep opsec review - you know the sick feeling that comes from the results. It's a bad world out there...

I'll be retiring to my cave...

(and of course I'm here and on fbook because stuff and g'ma needs kid pix - irony noted)
