Travel Insurance
So I had some business in Kingston and decided to get my wife to fly down and make a vacation out of it. She got sick at the last minute and couldn't make it. We had the travel insurance. So she goes to battle and gets nowhere.
She eventually got most of the fare back from the airline (American) on a voucher, but she went after the insurance company on principle. Two months later they coughed up the full fare - $820! So now she has a voucher and the cash! So can she use the voucher (it's just a number and you book the ticket on-line). Or should we just count it as a win and be satisfied with the money?

I think the airlines did you a solid INDEPENDENT of the travel insurance.
Might as well use them both. |

The airline only gave you the voucher to make a not-so-ticked off customer. They had no obligation to make you whole. So if you are pleased with the treatment they gave you, they got their money’s worth.
The insurance company, on the other hand, appeared to make little effort to make you a happy customer. I suppose at some level you owe them the voucher, but what are they going to do with it? I had to use travel insurance twice and both times I had to submit a doctor’s report of sudden illness in order to get paid. That’s not unreasonable.

What would travel insurance run for a pretty expensive hunting trip (say 25K)? Can you even do that....ballpark figure?

We always do travel insurance for big trips. It's paid off once in a big way when things went south for a bit. there are different companies and different rates.

Don't most credit cards have travel insurance built in? Mine do.
Since my wife is not a US citizen (she's Thai) she usually has to buy travel health insurance to get her Schengen (european union) visa. It's about $50 so I go ahead and buy for myself too. Then you don't worry about racking up an insurance bill or worse yet, having to get flown home.
