Coming down with the Sig(Sauer)ness...
 

Back at the end of Feb I bought a P226 Legion RX. Started learning how to actually shoot a pistol with it and have really had fun. There really is something about a metal framed handgun.

So I've done a couple IDPA matches and thought I'd like to try the compact class as well as try shooting without the red dot. Stopped into my LGS and he had quite a few Sigs to pick from. Handled a stainless 229.....maybe a bit too fat. Handled a 226 with the fancy 'G10' grips....hmmm feels nice but I have a 226. Then I handled a 225A1.

The moment it was in my hand I knew it was my next gun. Single stack 9mm. Metal frame with decocker which is a must for me if I'm gonna be holstering the gun at matches and at the range. In short this gun just feels wonderful in the hands.

Wait period ended today so I closed the office up early and hit my local range. I'm no pro but holy goodness do I hit the target well with this thing! It's not perfect as the slide release lever is almost impossible and apparently my grip causes the gun to occasionally fail to lock back on empty. But I gotta say I love the gun. just a perfect size.

Nice. I have an older 226.

But why does your grip prevent lock back? Not sure how that happens.

It's a wonderful disease. I've got a 226R and a 938.

That sounds a lot like my real deal Swiss P75. It came with the Swiss officer’s name and number taped on a piece of paper inside one if the grips. It is a single stack 9mm P220.

It is very accurate and my favorite hand gun.

my 226 is ooolllddd.

but still very accurate. it's been in/out of a service holster so many times, it is rubbed smooth in spots.

with me it rides the safe until i get off my butt and buy some 10-rd mags..

My 226 and 938 also might need a new sibling. Might have to check me out one of them.
The 226 shoots nice. 938 is good for what it is, but certainly not a recreational gun.
Have to admit that I poke a lot more holes with my Ruger MKII. More economical to feed and all...

Single stack Sig 9mm are nice pistols.

YEARS ago when I was purchasing my first personal carry weapon, I shot many different makes.

The Glocks just did not get it for me, just not the right fit. 1911's at the time (pre-Kimber) were too heavy. The Sig 220 was my choice. Back up was a P-230 (a wonderful pistol). From there I splurged on a M-11 (p-228, which is a pressed framed double stack 9mm) and a P-229 (one of my favorites in 40 caliber).

Fast forward 25 years. Still have the 230, the 220, but my favorite is my Kimber full frame Comp. I recently purchased a Kimber Pro-Carry II (Thanks John) and that is an extremely nice pistol in 45 Caliber.

Still love my old P220. It is going back to Sig for a new Lower Receiver and I will probably get another 20-30K rounds through it.

Shot the 225A1 at IDPA yesterday. One great course (15th of 48), two marginal and two awful.

Last course had two 6" steel plates on either side of a no-shoot target. Felt confident going in I'd have no trouble but must've missed them at least 4 times. Must've gotten frustrated as I managed to hit the no-shoot TWICE! Quote of the day was another shooter in my squad (pro looking dude with military buzz cut and team shirt) seeing the two shots on the edge of the no shoot and say 'good lord man w t f were you aiming at?!'.

Times on longer range stages were lousy and I thing it's me taking a while to pick up the front night site. Ordering a red fiber optic front site to replace it as it was recommended by another guy there some time back.

Used all three mags on several stages and didn't realize till today that I had forgotten while capacity for the compact class is 8 rounds you can put +1 in at the start. Duh.

Just the same it was yet again a fantastic time!

Red bar front sight and 19lb mainspring added. Wow.

This particular model comes with a 24lb spring (red paint on it indicates this) which is apparently a bit stiff. 30 second swap to a $3.99 19lb spring and the double action pull on this gun is sweet enough that anyone with a half proper grip will have no problem at all keeping the da shot in the zero zone.

I can slow fire my 226 better but this 225A1 is just magic feeling in the hands. Also finding I prefer 147gr ammo for quicker times. De state shoot is this coming weekend. Hoping weather is ok. My goal is to finish better than 1/3 of my class. with 12 stages its gonna be a real test of ones ability to stay focused for an entire day. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532992483.jpg

Dang, the 225A1 is one that I've never thought I needed because I had a 229 Legion. Maybe I should have collected them all! Hope you do great at your shoot this weekend! Let us know the results afterwards :)

Handle one Eric, you might just love it! Some say it's a mini legion as it comes with the SRT and more importantly (or rather impossible to duplicate) the undercut below the trigger guard on the front strap. With the 19lb spring my front sight on this compact gun is every bit as steady as my 226 Legion on the DA pull. If I pull a round low it's recoil anticipation and not a heavy trigger causing it.

I'm unsure of which Sig comes next. Really like the idea of getting a trade in and having it coated like Ricks guns. Or maybe a 229SSE and go G10 grips instead of the rosewood which look awesome but are thick.

Handled a 320X5 and gave it some thought but I'm a little nervous about such a light trigger pull striker gun in a holster and honestly the gun itself just doesn't really speak to me.

One thing I am finding is the front fiber sight while easier to pick up is perhaps a little tougher to get absolutely perfect. Issue is it's a much smaller diameter than the rear dots and the thinner blade while not obscuring the target does leave more room for error in left/right alignment.

One thing that is beyond doubt is this whole learning to shoot a pistol business is a lot of fun. It's like when I first learned to drive or ride a bike. in a fairly short time you go from being a danger to everyone around you to not entirely incompetent. I can see the journey from 'not entirely incompetent' to 'good' is a long one though.

btw Eric as registered Legion owners we get discounts with Sig. I emailed my rep about having Sig do xray3 sights and the action enhancement package on my 225 and they would give 15-20% off.

The 320X5 is fantastic and will hold up to a lot of abuse! Haven't had that feeling of nervousness with the trigger on the 320X5 that you're describing. All my friends with the aftermarket glock triggers have no issues as well. You'll be fine!

Sweet, glad to know they're giving discount on work at the custom shop!! I haven't needed to get anything done, but I'll take a look!

I've owned a Sig 220 for many years. It is one of the "Americanized" ones with the push button mag release. I bought it used (police trade in) about 35 years ago. Fits my hand just right! Over the years I have acquired 4-5 of the single stack magazines so only having 7 rds at a time is not an issue. It would be one of the last to go!

If you like your DAO Legion, you might want to check out the SAO version if/when you get a chance
Obviously a bit of a change-up WRT to training/practice (condition 1/thumb safety vs. de-cocker, etc.), but the (Legion-only)SAO trigger is pretty phenomenal right out of the box.
