I say go for it.
|
^^^ agree. There is no downside to getting the car.
|
Hell, I wish I was in a position to buy it.
|
That’s likely a 600-700hp car with those mods, possibly more — you need to talk to the owner and get the full details including who tuned it and what clutch is it running. If more than 750hp, has the bottom end been beefed up (usually rods/bolts)? It may also have methanol injection. The upgraded radiators are for track use — typically not needed, but nice to have if you’re doing lots of laps. It sounds like someone loved that car, and given the other track oriented mods, it’s possible it has the GT3 suspension arms too. Sounds like a nice car. The guys on 6Speed forum will have all the answers.

Clutch was done at the same time. Front diff is out for weight saving. This was not a track car but was driven by a 62 year old lawyer from Newport Beach, CA who likes speed. I am told it makes just below 500 hp at the crank. I want this to be reliable as it will be my daily driver because my wife now want the Cayman because its PDK (she drives stick as her first car was a stick shift Corolla). he knows the car very well. I think I just lucked out on this one |
Are you still talking about this? Why dont you own it yet? :)
|
Because I have to somehow create parking. I'm buying it and will call my mechanic about storing it in his shop for a few.
Owner just want what he put in it the up grades the last time it was in the shop, about 42k. He wants to unload it due to a devoice. His lost, my gain. Freaking parking is kicking my azz. Looking like I am building out my parent's garage. |

Good luck with purchase. Sounds like a nice build and $42k is a good deal for all that documented work from a quality shop. The owner may not be a track guy, but it sounds like it’s been setup for track work. The front diff removal, radiators, and suspension, all scream track prep, and are otherwise not necessary for just ordinary hauling ass. Also, at 500hp, it’s also pretty darned conservative on tune. Actually — I forgot you’ve got crappy California gas — that’s what’s holding the power back. You could likely turn 600hp at the crank with that setup on quality 93 octane. E85 would turn 700+, but you’d likely need bigger injectors. I bought an 997TT in December — it’d been modified to run e85 and did 630 to the wheels with no other power mods other than injectors, clutch, and tune. These motors are beasts. All that said, for street driving, I prefer the 93 tune (~600 crank) — it’s more linear. The e85 tune is mental when the boost hits — like engaging warp drive — scary fast, actually. Best wishes and stay safe!

Funny. Hey, its a built 2.7. It wouldn't go over 110 unlike your 3.6

My car with a GIAC tune, FVD exhaust, and hi-flow cats only makes 498 hp in the 91 octane mode. In the 93 "pump" mode it makes about 521 hp. in "race" mode on pure 100 octane, it hit 542 hp. Those number pale compared to the work done on that 996TT. |
That is awesome!
After having the very heavily modified 964T, I was specifically looking for a non modified 996TT to daily drive. Sounds like that one has some balls too and is really set up for track life. What year is it? Bill |
Wow Craig, thanks for that. I am not looking for crazy hp. 500 is just enough for the street (is there such thing, enough HP?).
Can you really tell the difference between 498 and 521 hp? Its all up top or the rev range? Bill, its a 92. With the front diff out, it should weight about 3200 lbs |
2002?
That means you don't have to mess with the MOST crap if you want to put a more modern stereo in, that is a good thing..... |

The difference between 498 and 540 on 100 oct is huge! If I had to pick where I feel it most, I'd have to say in the bottom and mid-range. Once over 5,500 rpm, you're either scared s#itless and looking for cops, or on the track looking for the shift point. At Laguna, I never get to the top of 5th, so I just don't really feel much difference at the top end. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/h3GeOJ93RWA" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
You STILL haven’t bought it yet?!
