Cleaning out my dad's garage- warning- p-car content.

And so it begins.

I got access to my father's house today to begin the process of cleaning the basement.
I have been allowed to get p-car parts. My dad was quite the packrat, and accumulated a kingdom of rust, but on my first trip was able to get some meaningful and sentimental pieces, most notably his valve adjuster and uni-syn. I've also got some of his early 911 steering wheels. I think I might even see if I can mount one on my SC for the time being. It will look silly, but will mean the world to me- and perhaps lighten the steering feel a little.

Quite frankly, I am overwhelmed, in what will potentially be a long process just to get the items. What I grabbed was what was accessible. There will be much more to come. Mostly rusted beyond comprehension, but a lot of stuff. There will be a lot of big decisions regarding what to sell off versus what to keep. For now, I think can say I won't be rebuilding the 912 engine. There will be much more stuff to come. I was going to try and hold off posting this thread until I had all everything, but after a weekend of tossing around transmissions and such, I figured what the heck. There is a lot of stuff, that I don't even know what some of it is.

I need to stay focused, and realistic. My dad's hoarding genes live on in me.
And no- I'm not selling the torque thrust wheels quite yet.:D I want to get everything together to see if there is enough for one or two project cars. Until I get the bodies to the house, I won't know where everything will go/ what will get sold, etc.

Does anyone ever want the 4-speed 901 transmissions?
I think one or two of these is 4-speed.
My dad also had a spare VW engine and two automatic trannys. He doesn't even have a VW. Arghhh!!! They are still at the house.
Anyone want a spare vw engine or two automatic trannys?
Edit- now I remember, it's a super beetle engine that came with a 912 he had.
sheesh.....

We may be interested in the 912 motor

LEAKYSEALS951 05-13-2018 09:56 AM

Hey Byron, I can send pics if you want- also details of what I know about the engine. It seems like he had an engine and a half- extra pistons/sleeves, and some extra carbs. He even has a rebuild gasket kit, but I don't know if it is for a 911 engine or a 912 engine. I need to look

I do not envy you your task, Leaky.
I remember all too well cleaning out my dad's stuff. And that was over 30 yrs ago.

If it's anywhere near a complete 912 engine, it has some value and I might also be interested. The early 911 steering wheels also have value, check prices before you just start giving stuff away.

Where is all this stuff located?

Wow, that is a lot of stuff. ! Id help you for free if I were closer, I sort of enjoy stuff like this. I've cleaned out a few hoards like that in my time.
Like you said, just stay focused on the end game . Nibble at it piece by piece . Try not to move the same pile too many times !
Once you get an alley down the center, things will start to happen faster
Best of luck

WOW! Be careful to research values. Those wood steering wheels are worth thousands. If the silver spoked one is Al, worth even more.

Once you're able to ID the goodies, advertise on the early S registry. Wealthy folks hang there who are willing to pay ridiculous amounts for unobtanium.

LEAKYSEALS951 05-13-2018 11:03 AM

Thanks all. I went out to take some pics for Racerbvd and realized I was missing one of the head assemblies for the 912 engine. I'm guessing it's still at his place. When I get back there I will get it and get detailed pics for the engine.

I'm pretty beat. One of the big issues is that this stuff was stored in a basement and mildew/mold got everywhere, so I have spent the day cleaning it up. Filled an entire trash can with moldy disintegrating boxes/stuff, and then proceeded to drop my cell phone in it, which dropeed to the bottom, so I had to dump the entire can of crap out and re-load the garbage can from scratch, getting to mess with all the moldy stuff again. Now there is popcorn all over the front yard. I think that's about enough for today..:D

Oh yeah, and what the heck is this? I can't remember what it goes to. Ideas?
Thanks again,
Ron

We need the case (actually the engine) for my buddies Speedster, which he inherited when his father passed and he was in the same boat as you.
We need to build up a engine.

Looking forward to the pix & info.

Will do Byron- I think the head is on another shelf. I will update when I get it. I was grabbing stuff right and left and didn't even realize I didn't have it.

Here's a headlight I had no idea existed:

and does anyone want a projector screen?

Trip Two (2) to the house.
This weekend, I went to the house. I was not able to get INTO it to retrieve more engine parts, etc, just stuff laying outside. The next trip inside house will possibly be in June.

I came home with this:

This is the second garden tractor of many more to potentially come home.
It's a shame this stuff was left outside. I did get a house fan assembly. Anyone interested? A rusted vice, and some SWB running gear. A can of PB blaster.

My dream build is coming along nicely. As one can plainly see, my front pan and rockers are in great shape- usually those are the first to go! :D

It's funny, because that picture has the windscreen, and I thought about laying it out in the pic, and I brought home a lot of glass, but didn't want to risk it for the shot....

So here's the glass-

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526944274.JPG

That's three windscreens, one is cracked..

And here are some rear windows:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526944334.JPG

but what is so bittersweet about this process is that is has nothing to do about the car parts- (I've been drinking a bottle of cheap california red- so bear with me)- it's about the memories- for example- this paint gun- my dad painted more houses with it than I can remember:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526944525.JPG

and here's a car I restored for a patient of my dad's when I was 17 (not with his housepaint setup). It was a 66 912 that had been hit in the side. That's pretty damn good restoration for a 17 year old!

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1526944652.JPG

I can't begin to thank my dad enough for the skills he taught me. In other news- I'm noticing the missing cast iron weights on my dad's lgt garden tractor which have gone missing. :)

I really am in a precipitous situation (I could say precarious- but precipitous seems to fit better). I do not know if I will be even allowed back to the house at all, but I am grateful for the opportunity to potentially make something of some of these 'projects' for my dad's sake.

Enough sappy stuff- if I get to go back, I will make two rooms, one for a drivetrain layout, and one for an interior layout, and I will meld the two. I would need a chassis though- but that's another chapter.

EDIT- in the background is that GD basketball net. It was way over 12 feet high- way over regulation. Thanks to it- I dislike all basketball ball related activities!!!! I cut it with a chainsaw at about age 20. Never looked back.

Cheers,

LEAKYSEALS951 05-22-2018 01:42 PM

^Hey Byron, not yet. It's all inside and I couldn't get to it. The only bike I got was outside, my mom's english raleigh 3 speed. I will let you know when I can get inside to the bikes/ rest of engine.
