BOSE Companion speaker- repairable?

I got these speakers from my FIL. I used them as additional speakers for the TV.
The other day they stopped working and wouldn’t power on. The cord on both ends of the power supply had frayed (too much tension/weak rubber) and shorted out. I tried to rewire the power supply and verified that everything is getting power but the speakers still don’t work.

I’ve now hacked open the power supply so it’s kind of butchered.

Now I’m thinking of what to do with the speakers. Is it possible to make them into regular bookshelf speakers? More hacking?

Thinking if it’s worth trying to wire them independently but I don’t think it’s possible.

I cannot even begin to imagine the Frankenstein impedance/resistance Bose came up with that the custom amplification was catering too.

I do not think one can live without the other.

They are known for doing stuff like that.

Musta smoked something when it originally shorted.

+1 the speakers will likely sound pretty bad without the purpose-built circuit that's in there.

bin it!

Its probably not worth the effort but they could certainly be fixed/hacked for cheap

Amazon/ebay/google is full for very low cost (sub 10$) amplifier board modules. Are they a single "full range" driver in typical bose fashion? If so it will be very easy to find something suitable. If you have to implement an active or passive crossover it will require a bit more effort but still a straightforward after dinner project.

Probably $15-20 and few hours of effort for speakers that could be duplicated quality wise for 40$ new, but sometimes its fun to mess around with these sort of projects.

I bought a pair of Bose 301's (series 2) in almost perfect condition at a yard sale. Paid five bucks for the pair.

I don't know if that matters in this case, but it would if they were mine.

:-)

I got the left Bose speaker wired into my garage stereo that’s made out of old car components.
The right speaker has more complicated wiring with the power supply and Bose control pod going to it. Not sure if I can use it for anything.

Sounds good and I’m happy to reuse some components rather than bin them.

Cool! We just like to pick on Bose....because Bose Blows . I drooled over 901s hanging in the frat house party room at 18...then came to my senses as I heard 501s, 301s, etc. and then other options .

By far the best car system I ever had though....Lexus SC400....Nak unit with about a dozen hidden Bose speakers....and a subwoofer too .....sounded awesome for a car
