I've heard a lot of the new album and really like it. That man can spin a lyric like no other!

Many, many years ago when I was in college, I worked in the basketball stadium when there were concerts. I worked a Bonnie Raitt concert with John Prine opening for her. It was good.

One of my favorites:

Dear Abby
John Prine

Dear Abby, dear Abby
My feet are too long
My hair's falling out and my rights are all wrong
My friends they all tell me that I've no friends at all
Won't you write me a letter, won't you give me a call
Signed bewildered

Bewildered, bewildered
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain't what you ain't
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood

Dear Abby, dear Abby
My fountain pen leaks
My wife hollers at me and my kids are all freaks
Every side I get up on is the wrong side of bed
If it weren't so expensive I'd wish I were dead
Signed unhappy

Unhappy, unhappy
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain't what you ain't
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing…

He was writing songs like "Angel From Montgomery" and "Sam Stone" and "Hello in There" as a very young man. I think he was in his twenties.

It makes me want to believe that some people are vessels for art and music from the great beyond to be channeled through....(Not taking anything away from JP, it's just that those songs and lots of others he wrote are definitely written through the eyes of an old soul!)

He has a lot of good lines. Mrs WD likes,
"How the hell can a person
Go to work in the morning,
Come home in the evening,
And have nothing to say?"
Story of my life. I don't talk a lot and she doesn't understand it. She thinks I would want to tell her everything that happened during the day. That lyric gets her every time.
Me -
It just happened.
It's done.
Where's my beer?

The man's a giant. His lyrics just transport me

One of my favorite records. Note the P-car content!

daepp 05-22-2018 08:35 PM

And the new record, Tree of Forgiveness, is really quite good!

From the same song, one of my favorite lyrics of all time:

If dreams were thunder and lightning was desire,
This old house would have burnt down a long time ago.

"there's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes"...most lyrics don't get to the point better than this.

ramonesfreak 05-23-2018 04:37 AM

Skytrooper 05-23-2018 05:32 AM

I cannot disagree John Prine is a freaking national treasure, equal parts Cash, Dylan, and stand up comedian

his new tiny desk concert is amazing as well

Prine was a big part of my HS music rotation.

I just ordered the new album - thanks!
