Is this cognac any good?

I’m going thru a bunch of my dads stuff as he is now in assisted living. I’m trying to sell everything he doesn’t need and just put the money into a bank account for him.

Of coarse he has tons of stuff, literally, it took 6 of us hours to move it into storage. So I came across this bottle and don’t know if we should just drink it or try and sell it. He was a home builder from the 70’s thru 80’s and would get stuff like this for gifts. So I’m sure it wasn’t high dollar, but people do collect strange things.

You have to ask? Yeah it is good. It has virtually no resale value...so open it and give a toast to good ole dad.

Middle of the road, you could do worse.

Very drinkable, will keep you warm on a cold winter's night.

Get's the job done.

I have a sensitive stomach but Cognac is kind to me.

If you like it, you should try Armagnac, it's one province over inland, more family run than big corporate run distilleries.

Cognac is all high volume big corporate, so quality craftsmanship suffers.

Armagnac is boutique.

You could easily re-gift those.

A search reveals these for sale but from my quick perusal all are.... Empty.

I'm sure with a little more effort one could find a buyer but would it be worth the effort/time for this one single item? That would be your call.

Try searching "courvoisier cannon bottle unopened".

VS grade, putting it politely, is pretty much good for cooking or maybe, just maybe integration into a mixed drink if one aspires to grab the suckiest host of the year trophy..
Drinking VS grade straight, is pretty much the realm for.... someone already drunk. Bender level.

That doesn't help you too much though. So some thoughts:

Option 1: Transfer the contents into a glass carafe, use that for cooking, and try to sell it empty.
Option 2: Keep the contents in it, and try to e-bay it. It will go to the head of the class because it is not empty. Further the above search may lead to a more suitable place to sell it.
Option 3: When the occasion calls for it, put a bow on it and gift the problem to someone else. Spit ball what you think the gift is worth, toss that money into your dad's off-shore bank account.

He doesn't have a liquor license to sell the stuff and you can't ship it. It is not worth the trouble. There is a reason why they are sold empty.

Drink or cook with it but enjoy it...It is a gift...

There is a nice secondary market check auction houses to see if there any recent sales. Lots of people out there paying good money for "dusties" like this. Don't list on ebay, they don't do alcohol listings anymore.

Thank you, I used to work with a older sophisticated gentleman and when we were on the road for work we would hit the bars after dinner.

We would sit down and I would order something common and he would order something I never heard of.

Didn't take long for me to catch on, I would let him order first then tell the bartender "I'll have the same". Thus I discovered single malt and cognac.

I don't drink cognac often but that brand is not bad for sipping after dinner while watching TV.

I wish I could drink hard liquor. It seems so romantic. Vodka/Tonic with a lime wedge was as close as I ever got.
Loved it...(past tense - diabetic).

It would sure look cool in my liquor collection, even empty.

Maybe since shipping is such a toss up, we just arrange to give to a Pelican that takes a drink, gives it to another that takes a drink, gives it to another that takes a drink, etc. so it can make it's way to the PNW. That's far simpler, right?

VS is pretty entry level for Cognac. I would keep it as a memento or re-gift it to someone else. I can't imagine it being worth much on secondary market.

keep it.

i would put a splash of it in every beef dish..especially one that has a beef gravy. or drink it until you think making "pew pew pew" sound with the cannon seems like a great idea.

It's delicious if you're an old black bluesman from Chicago.

VS - It’s not going to be very smooth.

But always reminds me of this, which still makes me smile:

Drink it then tell us what it was like once the hangover has worn off.

The reason I'm being a bit negative is I stole a bottle like this from my mom when I was a high school boy. Eww, even the thought of it makes me feel ill LOL

On A certain blues trip I did one of the “stars of the show” would put down a .750 of remy all by himself, every show night. I learned to loathe the smell of it oozing from his pores.
