Apple pay... Samsung pay

Finally gave in and got a smart watch, Samsung Gear S3.

Now it is asking my if I want to setup "Samsung pay".

Looks pretty cool, I know Apple has something similar for their smart watch/phones.

Anyone using one of these apps?

Am I paranoid or does it seem inherently risky to load your credit card in/on your phone/watch?

Yeah, yeah, I know... I just ordered coffee online at Amazon... but waving your watch/phone over the card reader and being charged, seems like it would be super easy figure out a hack to read your device covertly.

And yeah, I'm not paranoid if everyone really IS out to get me!

I'm not familiar with Samsung-Pay, but I am familiar with Apple-Pay.

Your credit card doesn't get saved into your phone. A token based on your card gets kept in your phone and I don't think the token can be (or, at least, not easily) reverse engineered to your card number.

I'd say it's about as safe as anything else these days. You're more likely to have your card number stolen while using it someplace with a lowlife employee than to have it hacked out of your phone.

I'm know that Samsung,Google, Apple, even Microsoft all have excellent software engineers and development teams.

I'm moving more and more and more to not trusting stuff if it isn't Open Source. Sure, I might never pull the code and look, and other people might not ever pull the code and look, but at least the possibility is there.

Personally I'd love to see something like a requirement 3rd party oversight and code auditing by a group like the Free Software Foundation, the folks at GNU.org, or the EFF. Even for proprietary software, having a reliable unbiased 3rd party audit....

Yes, why?

It had battery problems at first but Samsung sent me a UPS label and fixed it for free.

Im sure the technology is secure, convenient and works well. The idea of transacting with out carrying your card (and wallet) is certainly attractive. The question is - do you want to add credit/debit card transaction and purchase details to the treasure trove of data that Google/Apple are gathering on you.

ApplePay is extremely secure, I’m sure Samsung is close. Much more secure than putting your card in a machine.

I cannot believe the wireless transfer from the watch to the receiver is more secure then putting the card in the machine.
It has to be easier to interfere with the data wireless.

Bummer... but we don't have Costco anyway.

But thanks for the tip!

FWIW I like the watch but it has issues.
