Dang Window 10 updates and file sharing!
Like millions of people I use Win 10 mostly because a few of the programs we use. In my business there is no option but Windows 10 Professional.
I have had to "fix" the file sharing after every update. The last update broke file sharing again. :( First off, I do NOT care about a server. I have three computers here in my home office, all are total peer to peer. All I want to do is move files or open a file across the network like I have done for years. I want is to open a work folder on each computer, and have it available to the other two on each computer. I do not have user names and passwords in use. It is ONLY me that uses the computers. No one else! All three are set us as administrator. Turn it on and it opens Windows ready to work. Except the folders that were shared no longer share. I have done the same setup as before, go to Manage Advanced sharing, all set to share like before. Windows changes that after every update for some reason. I can right click on the folder I want to share, and say share with everybody, full permission. How do I get my computers to learn to share again? I want them to share like a drunk with unlimited liquor cabinet. Free and open. |
Looks like this last updated removed home groups as well, which was going to be my recommendation.
The only other option I can think of is using a NFS, just save files to that over the network. |
The latest update was not good.
Had to delete and re-make my shares. And that was even with usernames an passwords. A couple of shares I had to abandon DNS and put in the IP addresses. Had to do a registry edit to get Remote Desktop to login. Still have not gotten Macs to open the windows shares, says does not support SMB anymore. Guess that makes it more secure if you can't login. |
I have a very small office. 3 machines. I used to run a server then about 2 years ago I installed a cloud server.
I love it, I can access it from anywhere even on my phone. It was not expensive and if I set it up, anyone can. Something to consider. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk |

Most of the files I generate and need to access from the other computers are simply gigantic. 4 gig files are not uncommon. I need full 1 gig network access. |

Toss Nextcloud on it and maybe hang a RAID stack and be done with it. https://nextcloud.com |

The bonus is I can access remotely too, I work from home a lot and can download the cadd files I need then upload them back to the server when done. I also have the app on my cel phone and never thought I would use it, I actually use it a decent amount, I loaded a cadd ap which allows me to download and view my cadd files, comes in handy if I need to see one when I am on a job site and do not have it with me. I have a 2TB version of this unit, it appears to no longer be offered. There are other brands and options, something to consider, not a huge expense and really works well, especially when hard wired. https://www.wdc.com/products/personal-cloud-storage/my-cloud-home.html?cid=google:ppc:mch-2018-q2:mch:nas:us_-_brand_-_my_cloud_-_phrase:my_cloud:mycloud:phrase&pk_campaign=us_-_brand_-_my_cloud_-_phrase&pk_kwd=mycloud_ct |
