chronic lane changers.

so I am going through town yesterday and this lady to my left tries to side swipe me to get into my lane.
I then hear a horn and I look in my mirror and she is trying to side swipe the guy behind me. SUCCESS !!! she changed lanes!!

so coming up to the intersection the lane we are both in splits and you can either go over a bridge or go to a light. I go to the light, she goes over the bridge, which BTW, the lane she was ORIGIALLY in also goes over the bridge.

same trip yesterday.
2 cars in the right lane going the same speed.
the one in back moves over in front of me and continues to go the SAME SPEED!!.

this happened to me twice yesterday

WHY?!!!!

I had a dump truck that was obviously spewing rocks as it entered an empty right lane onto the interstate. It then came another two lanes over.

I still have the rock chip in my Jaguar from that, sigh, it is to this day my only one. Why he had to swipe across the interstate and chuck rocks at me is just a mystery. If He'd just stuck it out in the lane on the right until he stopped spewing rocks I probably would not recall or remember it.

The thunk was not a happy sound.

I see it more in urban areas. I think it is a mentality of trying to eek out whatever small advantage you can in every situation.

Around here, I usually only see it when the local university has its move-in and graduation weekends.

my other favorite is when someone is the right lane of a 2 lane left turn and they STOP traffic to get into the LEFT lane of the 2 left turn lanes, even though there are big white left arrows ,then make their left and have to get back into the right lane.

(.gifs don't upload for me on this website but)
There is a .gif where a driver stops in the middle of a freeway.
Three semis flip over and jackknife trying to avoid the stopped car.
After the carnage around settles, the stopped car finally crosses a few lanes and leaves via exit ramp.

Road signage has a lot to do with it.
If accidents happen regularly at a certain intersection, the traffic engineer is not doing their job correctly.

I did not click post on this in a recent thread.

A impish game I play when I see a short sighted lane hopping dufus coming up at a distance, is to observe where a really, really, slow car is. Then as they approach this slow I try to arrange traffic such that right as they get there, the next gap is that slow car.

The dumb driver isn't looking at both space and velocity, and bam, they get stuck.

Sometimes I can do this(from a distance) two or three times before they to me.

Since I am thinking ahead, I can often do it by a half mph adjustment.

Once they get to me I just let them sail by, they never know its me.

People accuse me of changing lanes too many times.... but its not.

Drive on the right, pass on the left. As soon as I can get back over I do.

Thus I appear to change lanes often.

I just want those that camp out in the left lane (PASSING LANE) to get over!

I must admit I do this as well. I'll observe one of these folks working there way thru and i'll slowly adjust my speed and position to stop their zipping thru. They have no idea. I will not do anything aggressive to block them but will close gaps stealthily. Just a game with me.

Changing lanes like crazy and at the next light they're right beside you. All that effort for basically nothing. The tailgater finally gets around you and tailgates the guy in front of you, maybe saves 2 seconds.
I like the stealth blocking game too.

Are you saying those lines between lanes don't mark the "slalom course" ?

I don't get it either...

was in heavy traffic one time, this idiot was trying to zip through traffic. so I would speed up alongside the guy next to me the idiot would jump behind me. then I would slow just little. idiot goes over to next lane I speed up just little. I guess you get the idea. this surprising went on for quite a while.
done it with others but none as long as this guy.

you might shot doing it these days.

A main highway narrows to 1 lane near my place. Its the primary route for everyone on the peninsula. The 'left lane ends' sign is merely a suggestion to most. Cant tell you how many times someone behind me will pass only to cut in front and jam on the brakes. Yep, to get 1 spot ahead in line. Not much comercial activity this way so I bet 75% of the traffic is local. Frustrating.

Could very well be. Hell, I've found myself in the wrong lane in unfamiliar areas. Not everybody has a GPS equipped smart phone.

(edit) So, when I see this happening I try to give a guy a break & let him in line...especially so during Oregon's vacation season, which has begun.
