Rare Muscle

Have to admit, never heard of a 1965 "SS396"..but evidently, 201 were made.

That is a rare one. I didn't realize any of that generation were available with 396s. I've only seen them on the later Malibus.

The 396 (425hp, and I think a 375hp ver) was also available in Impala SS in '65. It replaced the 409 in that car. (Both the 409 and the 396 were available in the Impala SS that year)

396s were available in 1970 as well, at least in El Camino SS, I believe/assume the Chevelle SS as well. I think at least some of them were factory bored and were actually 402s. (a buddy had a '70 El Camino with one in HS)

According to Wikipedia.

Used in:

1965 Chevrolet Corvette
1965–1972 Chevrolet Chevelle
1967–1972 Chevrolet Camaro
1968–1970 Chevrolet Nova
1970–1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Chevrolet trucks
1965–1972 Chevrolet Biscayne, Chevrolet Bel Air, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Impala SS, Chevrolet Caprice
My first car was a '65 Impala. Nothing near as sexy as mentioned above, but I'd love to have a '65 Impala 2dr 396, 4spd, LSD, power disc brakes, power steering and AC as a toy.

I had a 1968 Camaro SS and the summer of 1969 I traded it in for a 1969 Z28 with the fiberglass hood option, dual four barrels and 3 MPG which even back then it was a wallet killer! I found out at the first drag race at the strip north of Saratoga Springs NY I entered the tech folks entered it as a 1968? I said nooooooo it is a 1969 but the had a book with the VIN's and options, build date, ETC and it had been completed in December 1968! It had something to do with NHRA and NASCAR rules where the build date of a car could determine the actual date? It allowed the owners to install later options in a car for race purposes or some such thing! I traded it in 1971 for a Torinp Talladega as the wife wanted more room? Go figure but later we traded for a Cosworth Vega of all things......a little rocket that dripped more oil than my 1955 Triumph MC.

I was never much of an American car enthusiast, but I had friends with some cool ‘Mercian iron. Bob Heller had a ‘59 or ‘60 Corvette with a 327 with dual quads. When he got on it the sounds from the side pipes and the moan from the carbs went through you like a Wagner opera. Great memories.

I'd love to have something from '65-70 or maybe even '72, but there are so many other things to do with money before I'm ready for that.

Cool. Guy in Portland has either chevelle #1 or Malibu #1. I forget. I saw it when he rebuilt the carb on a 63 international pickup for me.

FYI Paul. That pickup is about 15 miles from you in sweethome. 30k original. Grandpa bought it new.

I remember those cars. Grew up with them. My older brother and his buddies...before I was driving age.

Some of those guys would build sleepers. Like a 4 door Impala with a huge mill in it. Stuff like that. So funny.

It's great to be a baby boomer!

A little known item, the 65 and on Chevelle models had a rear suspension that would push down and the rear body would lift like the drag cars of today. The Mopar's immediately copied it. Up until that time the cars would rock back as it was thought that the weight was transferring to the rear but noooooo, it caused the ear wheels to want to lift?! Watch the early stock and super stock cars like the 61 and 62 Old Reliable and then Bill Jenkins' later Camaro to see the difference. It was about that time the "line lock" came in and I think the Ramchargers had one of the first setups on their Dodge. In some old YouTube videos you actually see their front wheels still and rear wheels very slowly turning. There weren't trans brakes like today.

Back in the day my dad's BF and coworker was head of the muscle car division (something to do with it, what did I know, I was a kid) at GM Oshawa.
Every 3 months he had a brand new muscle car, GTO "the Judge" Camaro SS, Corvettes, convertibles, always something cool and I'm pretty sure he had one like this one.
As kids we drooled all over them and he would always take us for a ride.

I had a barber back when I was a kid. I almost bought his '65 Impala SS with a 409. I think roughly 500 W motors were left over and went into the early cars. Who knew!

I saw a '65 Chevelle with a 396 at a local car show on Long Island, pretty cool car.

Dad had a 1966 SS 396 4 speed in midnight blue and it was totaled when some woman crossed 24' over the center line on the inside of a corner and hit him head on and totaled the car. Then he bought a 1968 in medium blue whatever the code was for that. Was clocked at 142mph taking mom to the hospital to give birth to me.
