I think you nailed it on the helo...... <iframe width="854" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7cNC8nEajPk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> The series featured Cody Allen (Perry King) and Nick Ryder (Joe Penny), two former army buddies who decided to open the Pier 56 Detective Agency (later known as the Riptide Detective Agency) in Los Angeles. However, realizing that computers and technology play a major role in many investigations, the guys recruited the help of Murray 'Boz' Bozinsky (Thom Bray), a brilliant but socially inept scientist and computer hacker whom the guys had met while serving in the military. Riptide was created by Frank Lupo and Stephen J. Cannell, and produced by Stephen J. Cannell Productions. The main theme was composed by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter. The team operated out of Cody's boat, the Riptide, which was moored at Pier 56 in King Harbor, California. The guys had several other tools in their fight against crime and injustice. These included Murray's robot (The Roboz—which, unlike most television robots, did not talk), Nick's aging Sikorsky S-58T The Screaming Mimi[1] helicopter, and Cody's speedboat, the Ebbtide. (Nick also had a classic red Chevrolet Corvette and Cody had a "Woody" station wagon.) Lt. Quinlan was a local police officer who continually harassed Nick, Cody, and Murray. Lt. Parisi, the guys' police contact during the final episodes, proved much more cooperative. Mama Jo was the crusty skipper of the Barefoot Contessa (a tourist boat crewed by an all-female crew) during the first few episodes. A female captain named Max managed the Contessa crew during the latter part of the first season. Later episodes also featured Dooley, a dock boy who occasionally assisted the team in their escapades. The show's penultimate episode, "If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em", saw Allen and Ryder acting as consultants to a television series which closely resembled and parodied Moonlighting, Riptide's former prime time competition on Tuesday nights. |
When I first read this thread title my first thought was Tom Selleck couldn't fit into the car anymore.
I understand why Hollyweird does it ($$$) but why use the same name? It's not the same TV show. It's full of strangers who have no connection to the original show. I'll pass unless the new "Higgins" spends a lot of time in a Bikini at the beach. |
Screaming Mimi. You got it.
|
You cant go home again. Its just not the same without Selleck. ANd someone said over the top, thats an understatement.
|
And a female Higgins? The banter between OG Higgins and OG Magnum can't happen because of the sex difference. OTOH, Tommy Lee Jones would make a kick ass Higgins! Like John Hillerman, he would be a native Texan playing a Brit.

Sorry, should have finished the thread.
Yes, Fall Guy was good. Well the scenery anyway and the stunts. |
Everything is retro out there trying to get the wealthy aging boomers to watch the commercials (probably a lot of big pharm adds for hemmoroid releif, or pain abatement).
|
There were those police detective shows as well. Miami Vice, Hunter, Sledge Hammer...Maybe not that one, thought it was a good spoof of those types.

And we are big Tom Sellick fans at out house (Blue Bloods, Jesse Stone) I never was a fan of the Magnum show but my wife was... because.. well.. Tom Sellick :D I think his acting has improved exponentially since P.I., again just IMHO. |
Quigby down under...a great oater. Very accurate on firearms used.
|
I like the new Hawaii 5-0. Hawaii is the star of that show. A lot of beaches, bikinis, shooting, car chases, bad guys get caught in the end...
It's not supposed to be Shakespeare! It's a 45 minute time-waster. Suspect the new Magnum will be the same. |

Grace Park. wow!! .the new lady is very hot as well. |

i saw that episode.
i had a buddy that would alert me any time Kono was gonna be in a bikini. he was a good friend. |

As for Selleck, he dated a friend's sister and she was really hot. He was a man about town back then, but not the lothario/playboy people thought he was. |
Little trivia....
The lady whose bikini bottom Magnum takes a quick stare at in the opening credits is North Shore regular Shirley Rogers who is/was often seen shooting surfing photos many of which made it onto the top mags. Shirley appears in the opening title sequence of every Magnum P.I. episode. Where Magnum is shown teaching her how to snorkel. The iconic image of Shirley cradled in Magnum's arms as he sneaks a peek at her rear end is quite possibly the most recognized scene from the series. The scene is originally from the episode Magnum, P.I.: Three Minus Two (1982). https://media.giphy.com/media/q1XgXST78HzCU/giphy.gif http://magnum-mania.com/images/mpi_s..._pool_full.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528242704.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528242704.jpg |
There's no actor I know of who had Tom Selleck's panache in that role...none. And there never will be. Just stop.

Also watch the new show, McGarret and Dano play well off each other. I have a bad habit of picking out logical mistakes in the multitude of cop shows we DVR. Unfortunately the new H50 has a lot of them... but the bikini's make up for it :D They also get some great cameo's |

Whomever came up with that rule was a genius |
I made it through season 3 on Netflix before they dropped it.
Why'd they drop it? This new one will be crap. The new magnum looks like the new Higgins compared to the original Tom Seleck. Girly man. |
What we all remember as the theme for Magnum.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xIaXl7SqkBw" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> What the theme was originally. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kyHiKu4JaiQ" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> I remember as a lad, ripping around Honolulu with my buddies playing the Magnum theme song on our cassette players. |
If you wouldn't have watched Gilligan playing Thomas Magnum in the original, then you won't watch the new reboot Magnum pi.
|
Rockford Files might be a close second.

Or a CHiPs reboot starring a gay Ponch and Grace Park as his partner. |
I think they would stick Zoe Saldana in the role of Rockford. Has to be completely different you know. Just keep the name so it sounds familiar.
Kind of like serving a steak but one made out of fruit and soy. |
Again....you will never find another actor like Tom Selleck or James Garner - they are unicorns....
Which is why the series' did so well and are so unique. The big picture is we are in a different time now. Our civilization has devolved. Much is relied upon through machinery and gizmos...not by human endeavour and character. It's just the way it is. Some actors will never be 'duplicated' or 'replaced' or even simulated. Think Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, and Tom Hanks. Newcomers are Chris Pine and Chris Pratt. There are others but regardless the TV shows" will never have the same quality because we are in a different time. Hell...even the cars they make now suck.....that alone makes a huge difference. YMMV.... |
Hollywood has ruined battlestar galactica, Star Wars, alien and most of the rest of my childhood.
I live in terror that they will remake big trouble in little China. |

So, they will remake African Queen but it will be set on an airliner and the plot will involve a casino heist and it won't be missionaries but ex-cons.
Gone With the Wind will be a gay couple in LA in the 80s. Big Tourble in Little China will have Shia LaBeouf as the main character set in San Antonio near the Mexican market. |
This is the demolition of Robin's Nest.
It's sad to watch this come to an end. I've been to the location a few times and glad to have seen it before this took place. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vo3hAxYv3Fk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Thanks Khal. I've been buy there a few times too. Someone really let it go.
Related: Apparently BHO wants to be Higgins. Looks like the security building is being left standing. Some SS guys get to buy some Magnum shirts.... live that dream. https://www.politico.com/story/2015/03/obama-purchase-magnum-pi-home-116233 |

I'm not even going to bother looking up a Magnum PI reboot.
The A team reboot movie already showed us the reality : It don't work. |
