I don't mean all the time, just those times where traffic is moving freely yet some navel-contemplating dolt has to self-enforce speed limits causing faster traffic to pass on the right.

You don't do this all the time? You don't "kick up (often dangerous/potentially deadly) debris onto their windshields" (and the windshields of others in the process)?

Bravo for you, Sir! Bravo!

Passing on the right is really just asking for trouble.

^passing on the right is practically mandatory here in NJ.

Just like @dad911 says------>

Hate to say it but I pass on the right all the time. NJ police tend to park in center divider, and shoot the left lane. If someone is driving in the left lane, at or below the limit, I'm going to pass them.

The right lane essentially IS the passing lane here.

There is a facebook page dedicated to the phenomenon of Toyota Prius vehicles hogging the left lane https://www.facebook.com/LeftLanePrius/

I'm in Germany for another year working. Its nice when you get on the highway and everyone stays out of the left lane. Driving should be a privilege you have to earn.

flatbutt 06-10-2018 05:43 AM

Actually it is legal to pass on the right if traffic on the left refuses to move over (when you're on a 2 laner in the same direction). I travel Rt 80 a lot and have seen many left lane residents get ticketed for not moving over.

We were able to take him out about 20 minutes later by outing in our right directions to make a left turn at on of the intersection.

15 minutes later we get stuck behind a Prius that would not go above 40 in a 45 zone, ugh.....

Here he could be charged with impeding traffic flow.

A while back a guy got all pizzy because he got a speeding ticket for in his mind not speeding enough to warrant a ticket. On the 401 the major highway between Toronto/Montreal.
He got a buddy to drive in the right and he drove in the left lane at exactly the limit, traffic backed up behind them for miles.

They were both charged with impeding the flow of traffic and careless driving. The careless was dropped, it was just there to make sure they wasted a day in court, but the judge didn't buy the argument they were driving the speed limit.
Judge basically said "it's not your job to police the speed limit" and warned if they repeated this next time he may not drop the careless charge.

I love Germany. The Police will get in the left lane and if you pass on the right you get a ticket. Too bad our police won't do the same.

If drivers would learn that the right lane is the "Driving" lane and the left is the "Passing" lane, life would be much simpler! I was driving south on I75 one dark night and passed a Toyota Supra in my 911. Sure enough, he sped up, got right behind me and hit the high beams. After a couple of miles, he didn't seem to ever be going to back off, I kicked the 911 in 4th and then 5th and drove all the way from Macon to Cordele (about 60 miles) running a bit over 120 mph! Never saw the Supra again! Truly a foolish thing to do, but it worked!

KFC911 06-10-2018 05:43 PM

I prefer to pass on the right....it's much easier to get my middle finger out of the driver's side window ;)

Don Ro 06-10-2018 05:47 PM

Snow birds out here are a PITA in traffic. 30 - 35 on a 40 road...in the left lane poking along.
On a road in town where you can do 50 all day long.

Especially if there is a slower car in the right lane that I am coming up behind. Or you pass someone on a 2 lane road, and as soon as you pass them they speed up and ride your bumper for a few miles then back off. With out sounding racist/prejudice the description on this driver is a black female and most of the time on the cell phone. Anyone else see this frustrating crap on the road?

its either the small penis syndrome or what I call "hovering"
they speed up not realizing it just because you are beside them

BTW, just happened this morning.
lady in left lane going 60, barely. I go to pass in right lane and I have to do over 70 to get past her and yes, there was a slower car ahead of me in the right lane.

I get around, she slows down, I am now doing 65 and and leaving her behind.

Borrowed from one of the random picture threads, but this sums it up for me:

As others have already mentioned, I too have noticed that some slower drivers seem to come out of a coma once you start passing, and speed up.

So yesterday we're going down to our son's house in Poway and I'm doing 75 in the carpool lane. People are going by in the fast lane at 85+ and my wife gets pissed at me for staying in the carpool instead of pulling over to the 3rd or 4th lane.
What say the collective?
This was on I-5 in the OC where the freeway is at least 3, 4, or sometimes 5 lanes wide in the direction I'm going (south).

86 ssinit 06-11-2018 08:17 AM

Scott it comes down to were there a lot of cars in the car pool lane trying to get past you? If so yes even thought you were doing 75 yes you should get into a slower lane.
If you want the police to ticket people passing on the right I think you may want to go back to drivers ed. The reason we pass on the right is because morons are doing the speed limit in the passing lane.
Where past that in New York.Seems like morons in the left lane and all passing is to the right.

KFC911 06-11-2018 08:50 AM

To me it's pretty simple...."slower traffic keep to the right". Doesn't matter which lane you're in, or what speed you're going, if someone is behind you, and you've got a lane to your right that's open, MOVE OVER ;). You folks thinking the left lane is a passing lane "only", imo, don't have a clue about traffic "flow control", and maximum throughput imo. We're not just talking Interstates here....much of my travel is on 5 lane roads (two each way, turn lane in the middle)....same thing....with stoplights :(.

Queuing Theory 101 and common sense :)

flipper35 06-11-2018 11:06 AM

Herding manifests itself in the following behaviors:

Driving next to you on an otherwise empty freeway
Hanging out in your blind spot
Passing you then slowing to match your speed a car length or two ahead
Tailgating you for no reason, with lanes open on either side
Speeding up to match you when you pass them

coldstart 06-11-2018 11:31 AM

Two words: cruise control

Use it, please. I have a few friends who are all excellent drivers (both on the track and road) but even they don't maintain a constant speed on the highway. They go from 75 mph to 70 mph to 65 mph back to 80 mph to 75 mph. Other drivers are even worse. I had a GF who was the biggest left lane blocker ever, especially when discussing anything in the car (Corolla of course).

If drivers just used the cruise control, they would maintain a constant speed that is appropriate for the roadway.

*end of rant*

ted 06-11-2018 11:57 AM

Scott speeding 20mph over the limit can be dangereous so why force drivers to speed in the right lanes while you refuse to match speeds in the left lane?

Agree 75 in a 65 is moving but sometimes the left lanes will be cruising at 85+.
Agree with your wife move over to the right as far as you can and still do your 75.
That's just sharing the road, which very few do in So Cal. ;)

I also move to the side and leave room for bikes that lane split.

Cruise control is great on an open road.
In So Cal there is so much merging and lane changing you cant drive very long before you have to adjust your speed and spacing and turn off the cruise.

For some setting the cruise at 65 and blocking the fast lane is their solution.
Frees up their awareness for priorities like office work and phone calls.

Tidybuoy 06-11-2018 12:11 PM

I pass people like that all the time. Here are my own personal rules that I like to follow:

1) when passing someone like the idiot in your story, always use your blinker when cutting them off.
2) when they start to tailgate you, turn on your windshield washers. a) this will piss off the person in the brand new Mercedes who's car was spotless and b) this will piss off the person with the filthy car and will have to smear their windows when they are forces to use their own wipers.

Lastly, I never have road rage. In the case above, I simply treat all cars on the road like they are moving cones and it is my job to get around them.

john70t 06-11-2018 12:19 PM

I drive the right lane only at normal speeds.
I do not block traffic.

But some hat jack in a pickup truck always has to fly up an inch from my bumper to change into the left lane on an empty highway.

Then they get stuck a quarter mile ahead in a long line of left-laners.
I maintain the same speed as always and pass them ALL on the right. Too bad you pick wrong lane.
Hello again. Hello. Hello to you too. Hello. Hello. See ya.
But from a dead stop the same jerk pulls into the right lane traffic moving at full tilt.
My lane.
Again.
