Not controversial in my mind. The team is named after the 86th infantry, who were named after Black Hawk.
Nothing like Cleveland Indians, or Washington, or Edmonton Eskimos... I think Washington's logo could have survived with a better name, but they are both gone now. Cleveland's logo needs to go too.

Naming a team after an individual, be it a warrior (Black Hawk), a coach/GM (Cleveland Browns) is perfectly acceptable in my mind. Possibly admirable.
A team name that is now (or always was) a racial epithet (Indian, Redskin, Eskimo) is inappropriate, as is the portrayal of said groups using racist images. As are the racist chants and actions, although God knows how those will be stopped. Very few of today's names are borderline in my mind.

These "offensive" logos are only inappropriate in 2020 woke standards...following the progressive narrative of eliminating anything, and everything that suggests racial inequality.

Naming any sports team after an Indian tribe is a sign of respect to that tribe.
How about the Apache helicopter? Is there a more badass helicopter anywhere in the world? I really don't understand what's going on with you guys

I grew up a 'Skins fan (beginning way back when Lombardi was the coach) but I do think the name "Redskins" is a pejorative that oughta be changed. There could be others out there that reasonable people might find offensive but I can't think of any off the cuff.

Of course "Redskins" is not a tribe but it is representative of Indians! Is it disrespectful or respectful?
What I'd really like to know is how native Americans feel about it. Would you back a team that was using a derogatory racial slur as a name? I wouldn't. I don't see a problem with Redskin because of the context. How about the Atlanta Braves? I'm sure if your searched hard enough you'd find someone who's offended by that.

Redskin is a racial epithet to Native Americans, somewhat similar to but worse than calling Jews Hymies, Italians Wops or Latinos wetbacks. It is along the lines of calling Asians yellow. The origin of the term is probably lost to history but it may have come from the colonial days when bounties were paid for dead Indians. The bounty was paid upon proof of a dead body, such as a scalp - a red skin. Calling Indians red men or Asians yellow people in general are offensive terms.
Ethnic names can be adopted respectfully, like the Fighting Irish, but they can also be offensive, like Chief Wahoo. There are a few million words in the English language. It shouldn’t be too hard to pick ones that don’t denigrate entire ethnic groups.
