Best years Mercedes diesel, Sedan, Coupe?

What are considered the better years of the Mercedes diesel sedans and coupes? From a monetary and ease of maintenance perspective. I'm talking about pre, say 1998 or so.

the older 4d built the legends for lasting but had very little power
early 5d lasted but no real power
the old 5's with turbo were good mid 80's OM617 Diesel
the 6 that replaced the 5 not so much esp the first years of the 3.0 in the bigger versions [3.5] had head gasket problems late 80's
the later bluetec motors were good but after your time period

So, 5 cyl TD's might be the best bet.

I've owned more than a dozen pre 1990s MBs, each of which was a fabulously designed and built automobile. Overall though, I'd give the nod to the 123 body.

+1.

Family had a 300D when I was a kid. That thing was an unstoppable, well-built tank. Don't remember it having a single issue. But, it was NOT fast, lol.

The OM617 engine should be your engine of choice if you’re concerned about Armageddon or the zombie apocalypse. It sips fuel, has some power and will run on just about any oil.

Take it for what it’s worth but an uncle who has owned an M-B independent shop swears by the W140. Insists it was the last M-B with the quality and reliability that built the brand.

W123's are the best IMHO. My DD is a 2012 E350 Bluetech. I shiatzu you not, it gets 42+ MPG if I keep it under 70.

+1 on OM617 available through '85 W126, has cast iron block and head. Later years have aluminum heads which are much less tolerant of over heating - cracked/warped heads.

I know MB purists will snort, but I absolutely adore my W210 E300 Turbodiesel. Its a ‘98. OM606 turbo engine is a very good one. Sought after by hot rodders actually. Car isn’t fast per se, but moves along quite well. Since the purists are after W124s and W140 (both awesome cars), the 210 can be had for less money so make a better value in my book.
