Looking for input from cyclists

Have spent 2 weeks looking for the perfect minimalist, small saddle bag that will hold an iphone, credit card and a $20 bill. It doesn't exist. I thought this would be perfect but it's 1 cm+ too small to hold an iphone 6.

https://us.sciconbags.com/elan-carbonium-series

I don't want to carry a spare tube or tools or anything else. The obvious answer is to just wear a jersey with pockets in the back. Instead I thought of an aluminum hardcase that would clamp to the seat post. Some kind of memory foam inside to store the minimum (phone, key, credit card, money) and protect the phone from vibration. Different sizes for different phones.

It would be lightweight, aerodynamic and stylish with different anodizing colors.

Stupid idea or something that people might buy?

Shaun,

Check out seat bags made to carry a spare tubular tire- I like this one. Not in stock at Amazon, but appears others carry it.

How’s the 928 coming along?

I would suggest doing a search for "bicycle spare tire bag" and one of the first to come up is the ones that Walmart sells. The first one on their page for $7.59 looks pretty good to me. Some thoughts: you don't need to worry about aerodynamics as it is mounted under your seat and stuck between your legs and color should be black as where it is mounted it will surely pick up lots of dust and dirt and finally you do not want to draw attention to it so it will not be a target for thieves!

I've got a couple of these..one on each bike. They work great. Amazon..fits under the seat.

Thanks everyone, I should have been more clear and also said I ended up getting this bag:

An iphone technically doesn't fit in it but I cut a piece of wood to size and stretched it just enough so I can get my iphone in.

The bag I posted in the OP would have been perfect if a phone could have fit in it.

Part of the issue, for me personally, is the mix of aesthetics vs. functionality and a few other parameters in deciding on a bag and pretty much everything else in life. I'm sort of a particular person and after getting fitted to the bike, needing new cranks, I spent twice what I needed to with a 75/25 split between aesthetics and weight savings. The benefit being they look fantastic on the bike and make me want to ride it more. Which I do so money well spent.

My question was more, would the case I thought of, sell. Probably not but it was fun to think about while riding yesterday. The vision was the Zero Halliburton of bike bags.

Thanks Rutager.

The 928, uggh. I'm building a 2.7 RS MFI motor right now and designing a custom filter housing on each stack. That and way too much business has kept me from fun with the 928. Just hired another assistant and that should free up some time to get back on the 928 in late July.

I put my phone in a ziplock and keep some bills around my co2 cartridge with a rubber band. Everything goes in jersey pockets. There is a canister that will fit in a water bottle cage.

I got something like this:

Fits my wallet, keys, and a multi tool (I don't carry my phone) but then I'm a "weekend mountain bike on the bike path by the beach" kinda guy.

I used any bag I could find that fitted the items needed. Then attach to underside of saddle with the old leather strap from pedals, the old type cage pedals. This doesn't tie you down to any bag and I usually found a bag in my house so no cost either.

This is the general idea with a different strap. I had a similar bag that held rain gear.

Exactly what I do. Little snack bag fits a 6+ perfectly.

If you don’t have a couple cycling jerseys, it’s worth the investment. You don’t have to buy the $100 ones. There are always deals on old versions. They last a long time.

My phone goes in my jersey's pocket. CO2 goes (one) in a lil' pouch along with a tire lever(one), and a tube (one). If any of them fails me, I am fooked only because I will have to hear it from my wife. Some time, I take my bottle and all that stuff goes inside except the cell phone. https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwje3u-JqdnbAhURxmQKHeLmBo0YABATGgJwag&sig=AOD64_1AeDWc-q0-3oWG4hKwOVpLzHJgeQ&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwiS0OqJqdn bAhVVOH0KHUm8Ap4Q9aACCEM&adurl=

The big bag drives me nuts behind the seat. Over the years, I wrap all that in a ziploc bag and crank it down with duct tape and stuff it under the seat and strap it down with a Velcro to the seat rails. Its very small and tucks under there well.

On getting a jersey, I have a one piece that I LOVE for longer rides. It's as though Pearl Izumi laser scanned me and made the perfect suit. It doesn't have pockets in the back. For shorter rides like into Harvard Square for pizza at Otto's, it's bike shorts and a t-shirt.

Either way I needed a minimalist bag for iphone for pics and locking my door and texting Uber if I get a flat. The stretched Bontrager is working fine. I thought the Halliburton hardcase was a neat concept.

Fall rides I have a jacket with pockets. Winter rides I have a styrofoam jacket with pockets, coolest jacket ever.

Why not mount it to your handlebars and use it for calculating miles and time? Loads of apps out there to do that. Some even sync to a heart rate monitor.

berettafan 06-16-2018 06:10 PM

A tip for the ziplock cell phone gig is wrap a fat rubber band or two around it to keep it from slipping easily.

Rubber band you get on celery works great for that

I have a seat bag the is very similar to that, can snug it up to the seat rails with a strap to secure it. I have a few small bags that fit inside the frame. Velcro to the top and down tubes, puts the weight lower. I greatly preferred it on the mountain bike to the seat bag, particular when the bike was ridden in anger up a hill.

the pockets are for food/energy gels/etc. perfect for cell phone. easy to access as they are long in the back. you can get plain style cycling jerseys if you don't like the wild stuff. Performance Bike has some that go on sale from time to time. I like Hill Killer for the neat designs. my seat bag is small and never touched. it holds tube, Co2 and levers.

Oh man, that's a funny list. I wish that was out when I was racing. We would have a good laugh. We exercise all that to the max. A coupe of us still do. My stem is still slammed (about 1/4" to about 3/8 " now that I am an old fart.:D) and black short only
