Did Trotz just give Washington the big "up yours"?

Barry Trotz resigns as Washington Capitals coach days after Stanley Cup win | Fox News
The Caps refused to sign a new contract until after the cup was hoist and all season there were rumors constantly running that unless he wins the cup there is no job... I think he just got revenge for the lack of respect for all he has done.

I heard on a sports show today that he was paid fairly low compared to other coaches in the league. Like you said there was no contract offer.

Trotz should get the Nobel Peace Prize for getting Ovi to be a team player and play some defense!

I would think the Islanders would be front runners for his service ........ and yes I believe this is a giant FU to management of the Caps .

He wanted to get paid. He opted out and became a free agent just like a player can do. Now they have to pay him or he signs with another team. Either way he's gonna make huge jack.

Primary issue, from my understanding, is that he wanted a long term (5 year) deal at rates comparable to Babcock, Julien, and Quenneville (the other Stanley Cup coaches). Caps weren't ready to go long term at that rate, and they've been grooming assistant coach Tood Reirden for some time.

Part of me is like "ok, this sucks - here's where the Championship hangover starts." But then the Caps aren't normally TOTALLY vindictive or boneheaded on these types of decisions (unlike other major Washington sports teams ;)), so it's not the end of the world. I hope.

Here's an amusing video of a political reporter caught on TV yesterday when she heard the news. She was reporting on the DOJ IG congressional testimony and looked half-asleep until she got the text from her husband. Hopefully not PARF :

I really believe that it was about be dissed by the team for hanging him over the edge with threats if they didn't get the cup. Trotz was loyal to Nashville for 15 years and I am fairly sure he didn't make the big dollars in a small market town like that. Read about his personal life and the way he handles players and you'll see what a classy guy he is. I think he was insulted and decided to go where there is more respect. I sure he has many offers already.

Trotz is a great coach and classy guy. No argument there. He also said after winning that he wanted to stay in Washington and he and his family loved it here. It's a business. They couldn't come to terms. And sure, maybe there's some lingering frustration with how he feels he was treated.

GM MacLellan took a lot of heat at the beginning of the season with the salary cap dump of quality players and "allowing" Nate Schmidt to get away in the expansion draft. There was a lot of pessimism from Caps fans at the beginning of the season and directly led to Ovi's "we are not going to be suck this year" comment. In the end, MacLellan has earned the benefit of the doubt, I guess.

"Yeah, obviously, I love the D.C. area," he told reporters on a conference call. "But when it came to the business aspect, from my standpoint, I felt that it wasn't really sincere [given] what we did together. So I decided that it was better to just move on."

Asked if he felt wanted in Washington, Trotz said: "Well, I'll leave that up to the Caps to answer that. I think, absolutely. We just won a cup together and so I don't think that was an issue. I think it was more principle."
Quote:

"It's good to be wanted," he said. "It happened really quickly because you go from one emotion of winning the cup to the next emotion of leaving the team that you just won the Cup with, and you have to make some quick decisions. I know the timing of it-end of the season, the draft coming up, free agency [and] all that-there was some urgency on that. Both parties knew that, so we went to work at it and got it done."
Read between the lines. He got dissed all season and they didn't make him a decent offer so he said "SEE-YA!"
