Seems like the obvious pick, IMHO.
Just wondering if Time sat on that picture during the campaign? edit: I may have wrongly assumed that pic came from Time, FWIW. Last edited by kstar; 12-17-2008 at 07:55 AM.. |

Contrary to popular opinion, TIME person of the year is not a prize, or an endorsement, but more of a statement of noteworthiness. A lot of bad dudes have been person of the year in the past.
Love him or hate him, there aren't a lot of more noteworthy people from 2008.

And did you see that Time's Wash. bureau chief is going to be Biden's press sec.? Full disclosure - I knew Jay in high school. He was a year or two ahead of me.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1208/16600.html I don't get how these "journalists" expect to ever be taken seriously again as "journalists" after having worked for an administration. At least Geoge Steponallofus had never worked as a "journalist" until after he'd left the WH. But Linda Douglass left ABC to go work for Obama's campaign. She's a lot older than Jay, but I bet they both plan to get back into "journalism" after their years in the admin. Who can take them seriously again? |

If McCain would have won, I bet it would have been Joe "AC" the Plumber and not McCain or Palin.

I basically ignore those azzholes at Time (and Newsweek), but what was their justification for picking Putin last year?

Is someone under the impression that Time's "person of the year" is somehow supposed to be seen as praise of that person?

DING DING. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Some people look for anything to bash Obama because they have hatred in their hearts.

Bottom line is that Time is in the business of selling as many magazines as they can. Their Person of the Year issue is their equivalent of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Given all the nuts buying up all the Nov. 5th newspapers in the hopes of selling them for big money many years later, I'm sure Time also wanted to ensure they get a piece of that action. Obviously, Time will have no problem getting access to the Obama White House. Their Wash. bureau chief is about to become Biden's top press aide. Lots of Time's bigshots are Dem operatives. I view this POTY selection not so much as kissing a$s, but rather selling as many magazines as they can, since their circulation ain't what it used to be.

I think the 2001 pick should have been OBL - I think the impact he made on the US and the world was greater than that of Giuliani.
So, Time did bow, IMO, to the overwhelming flood of criticism it would have received, whether that criticism would have been founded or not. |

I agree, but even if you ignore all of that, I honestly cannot think of a more "newsworthy" -and already historically significant- person of 2008. Can you? Best, |
